looking for advice on barrel legnth

I'm planning to build a 30 BR for local benchrest matches I've pretty much made up my mind it will be 1-17 twist and some of the matches are out to 500yds which ideally isn't the best for the 30 br so ive read anyway my main question is how long of barrel should I go with ill be using a savage pta action im thinking 26-28'' barrel length starting with a 1.060 to a 1.000 barrel contour i'm new to the rifle building world also so any tips will be greatly appreciated thanks in advance for your help

You are asking a lot from a 30 BR. The wind eats up the 30 BR at 200 yards and is hell further out. Consider 2 guns, a 13.5 Lbs 30 BR for 100-200 yards and a 6BR for 200 yards and further. If you only have one gun go with a 6 BR 10 twist and 80-90 grain bullets. 6BR and 105 are not that good at 100 yards. Just my opion from shooting both for 5 years...your mileage may vary based on other opions. Barrel length for 30 BR HV 21-23 inch and 6BR keep under 26".

I knew the 30 br had long range issues I guess what makes me want to go 30 br is I saw a fellow clean house at a 400yds match last year but it also was a calm day as well most of the other shooters were using 6br and 6ppc

Also thinking of 6mm dasher cartridge I have no experience with the dasher though only what ive read they claim to be good out to 1000yds , I am brand new to all this I am taking a gun smithing class now and would like to get a lathe and mill after I learn more right now im limited to using a savage PTA action and I have only shot factory class with my 22-250 sako and ive actually done extremely well I have won a couple matches I did just get my hands on a old sako single shot 6ppc that if it has been shot its only been a very few times it even had the original box in perfect condition
