Looking for Advice/Help with Stippling Tool

Folks,

I’m looking for someone to make, sell rent or loan me a stippling punch so that I can customize a brass archery release. I’m a competitive archer, and I have a personal need that I need to address.

I’ve a couple fine examples of stippling on a couple of .45’s and other pistols, but I cannot seem to locate a punch, and what I’ve learned through the internet o_O is that many of these types of hand tools are made by the gunsmith.

I’ve got an above average aptitude for working with my hands, and would really like some help at this point...please lend me some wisdom.

Brownels sells stippling tools, they did have 3sizes I think.

There are several ways to stipple. An air hammer scaler with modified rod tips works. A Dremel tool with a very small round tip cutter would work on brass. A simple center punch might also work.

Stippling tools generally have three sides ground into tip. This gets you the diamond look, and good for gripping. I use a regular punch that I ground this way, works very well. Just start banging away randomly, trying to use same force with hammer.

I use a coarse round file: lay it on the part, and use a brass hammer to give it a whack. you will eat up the hammer and file, but it will give nice sharp stipple "scales" from the file's impressions.

Thanks Guys. I’ve got some more spring work to do for my wife and kids, then I’’’ find the right punch...grind the right tip...and tear into my release...I’ll post a before and after pic when it is done!

I modify a air gun made to de scale weld and remove slag . Grind the needles to a 3 sided blunt point , use a slip fit copper tube around as many needles as you can handle / control , practice . It makes short order of the work . You can remove most of the needles , I use about 10 and use the air pressure to adjust intensity for the hardness of the wood .
This wasn't my idea , an old mentor /boss at Flaigs in Pa showed me .

Biggest thing I see that makes it look good is really sharp defined borders. Sometimes a piece of round stock temporarily glued in place makes a great edge stop.

Good luck.
