Looking for a stock

I just purchased a Remington rifle in 308. It has a new barrel on it and if I'm not mistaking, the diameter of the barrel at the receiver is 1.250, and at the muzzle is 1.170. IT IS A BEAST!! Heavy as hell!!
Right now it sits in a Choate Varmint stock. Not a very pretty looking stock at all, but it serves its purpose.
I would like to replace it with something in a Tactical stock, without dumping like 600 dollars into a stock.
Where should I look??

Have you looked at KRG or other chassis Mfg's
There are quite a few options out there and they work quite well.

If you're looking strictly for a stock, look at a GRS Berserk. Very adjustable and easy to shoot. To get into a good chassis $600 won't be enough. Euro Optics carry a huge assortment of them. Be aware that there is a BDL stock and also a stock for M5 bottom metal.

I just got a KRG Bravo, and it is pretty nice for the money. I believe the 1.250 diameter at the receiver you mentioned is the max for that chassis. I could be wrong, I'm just on my first cup of Joe.

Rather than wait for the ensuing 900 suggestions, I suggest that you copy the search wording below in italics and use your favorite search engine to drum up suggestions. This way you can take your time to read the descriptions and compare prices.

aftermarket M700 tactical rifle stocks

$600 may appear extravagant in your thinking but in reality, this is the lower end of true 'tactical' chassis stocks. But simple searching will provide the entire range of prices and accessories. Bell & Carlson and H-S Precision make the affordable 'chassis' stocks with the aluminum bedding blocks. Stocky's Stocks has their own line(s) as well.

The all aluminum chassis start at $600 and zoom up to $1,600 quickly. Remember these are ala cart menu driven pricing. They start with the basic action section then add the cost for every other piece. Before you know it, you're at $950 or more depending on the accessories for a complete chassis.

Enjoy the search!

After owning several nice high dollar stocks I like the KRG Bravo the best for the combination of performance, weight, and value. The Choate tactical is an excellent performer, but on the heavy side.

Far too many folks demean the Choate out of reading prejudicial, over opinionated, elitist blog-type responses. How's that for rude... ;)

I had a local sheriff ask me about mounting his Winchester M70 in a Choate Tactical stock. It would serve as his squad SUV duty rifle if it worked out. There was nothing to the mounting, it was a drop-in. I took it out to test shoot it before I decided on bedding.

Fun stuff! Duty ammo (Black Hills) was shooting 5/8" at 100 yards consistently. I did bed the recoil lug which merely added to the consistency not accuracy.

The Chief Deputy Sheriff saw the results and authorized the Choates for duty carry only after testing the Rem. 700 version. Easily done with very similar results. All of the Sheriffs appreciated the ease of the conversion which was carried out by the Department armorer. The budget appreciated the affordability.

I have one I still use for a test bed occasionally. These are nearly indestructible but they are heavy!

Enjoy!

:)

I do like the looks of the KRG Bravo stocks. Since this is a new rifle to me, maybe I will just wait until I take the rifle out to the range and see what it can do.
