Looking for a great arbor press?

Janesville are some of my favorites... I would offer, say, a bill less than the BIN...

Not mine, just a really good press for those that may be looking.

Those little beauties are a real temptation. But I ended up with a 1/2 ton arbor press from Harbor Freight for about $35 and put the money I saved (along with a bit more) into a good scope.

Doesn't correspond with the image on the Janesville site:

Yeah, I hear ya, but if you want a straight throw and made in USA quality it's gonna cost.

The link you provided is the stripped down model; the one I posted is a $800.00+ press with the extras.

What can I say? I’m a tool geek that loves the made in USA stuff. :)

Everything, but reloading wise; from just seating bullets with Wilsons to some of my ol’ FL hand dies. Plenty of power, but still a great feel for seating. It’s on my home bench, too heavy for a range press…

compared to K&M Arbor press than that is realy ugly...

I tried the Sinclair (first one) and two or three others before I bought a K&M. Mine dosn't have the dial indicator on it (was not offered at the time). Think I have less than a hundred dollars in it.

Having owned both…
Pretty is what pretty does, and frankly, the Janesville is in a different league, as it should be for the much higher price point.

first of all I do not like gear and rack arbor presses right from the start. But otherwise I see zero advantage over the K&M. All your doing with it is neck sizing and seating bullets. The K&M is a link design that gives you a nice feel as it works. The gear and rack are a little more powerfull, but once again I never have a problem neck sizing or seating bullets. I neck size most of the time with powdered graphite and lead shot, and there is slightly more resistence but the end results are better. Maybe I'm just not seeing something.

I once started building a new arbor press for myself, but just never bothered to complete the build. I used a round rack that was ground to size and very strait (an old machine part that was brand new but the machine was scrapped) the gear was also ground. I ran the rack thru an Ampco bronze bushing that was honed to fit the rack with about a thousandth clearence. The gear was fit to within .002" clearence. The whole setup was similar to the Janesville unit. Probably squarer in the end. Was extremely smooth and had a nice power ratio. but was also big and heavy even though the rack was only 1.125" in diameter. Never completed it (had not built the bolster plate yet), and somewhere out in the garage I have all the pieces laying around. It just was anybetter than what I was using at the time. Plus it would have been a pain to change from small cases to longer stuff. The dies I use with an arbor press are very tight fitting and they are what does the work. The press just moves them.

Whoever said that's all I ever do with it? Hardly... Shoot, I would just use my hand, if seating bullets was the useful extent of an arbor press.

Gary, (lazydays)

I’m going to assume the best; that the original post, and spirit of this thread (Looking for a great arbor press?) didn’t zoom by you and that in fact, you’re not trying to be argumentative for the simple sake of it. However, someone that would post of building an arbor press, and then ask what you would use one for, makes me wonder…but the internet is a media that is difficult to ascertain intentions, devoid of inflection as it is.

I use one for; bushings, bearings, split pins, tapered pins, sights, bending, forming, punching holes, staking, riveting, pressing (ha)! and all sorts of tasks that benefit from a mechanical advantage device with sensitivity, including, but not limited to…seating bullets and forming brass.

Best,
K
