Looking for a Case Trimmer: Any suggestions?

BigGunBarry

Age wrinkles the body. Quitting wrinkles the soul.
I came across this on The daily caller

Anyone ever heard of it? Suggestions?

To me it is a refined copy of the worlds finest trimmer.I sure it will work as good as the wft and you can adapt it to different calibers.

here's what I use ;D

for very low volume/odd calibers i use lee..omg trimmers...
for medium volume i use wilson case trimmers( i have several...some preset and left that way)
for high volume i use my lathe with possum hollow trimmers

Get the adaptor and throw the crank in the drawer. The wft is a good trimmer but you should wear grip type gloves. I found it hard on my hands.

Buy a Wilson or Giraud and never look back. They are the ones that give you very precise and repeatable trims. IMHO, even a Redding 2400 is more dependable than those cute little hand jobs.

lee. simplicity and precision. Yes, I also use Forster, Wilson. Really, really prefer the Lee. I'm not a high volume guy. Maybe do 100 @ a sitting. The only thing is you are married to the gauge length, there is no adjustment.

And I'm talking about the original thingy, not the new coffee-grider dealio. Maybe that one is good too… dunno.

Really, they are all just fine IMHO...

I use the simplest of all - the Lee hand held cutter with the case chucked in a drill.

I no longer use my manual lathe trimmer which cost over 10 times as much. Use the cutter with the ergonomic ball handle.

Giraud Power Trimmer is simply the best trimmer there is.
After i got my first, i have never used another case trimmer tool and never will.
It trims, and chamfer inside and outside of the case neck, very consistently, just as good as my old wilson trimmer.
Trimming and chamfering a case only takes me 10 seconds, just to push down with constant force and turn the case and it's done, it's genious and saves you a lot of time at the bench if you reload some.
It's not cheap, and you will have to wait for a couple months to get it, but it's certainly worth it in my opinion.

Another happy Giraud user here. I only wish they'd come out with some sort of micrometer fitting for the case holder to make adjusting trim lengths faster and more easily repeatable after changing calibers.

Hand cranker, Wilson.

Powered trimmer, Giraud.

I hardly ever break out the Wilson, the Giraud is simply the one reloading tool I can't live without.

Hey cobra! Almost as good of investment as a Prometheus II! I have 2 Girauds now, one for cases and one for meplats. Buy about 20 times cry about 20 times, I think you know what I mean. Too many cool tools out there.not to hijack thread, but if you haven't tried John Perkins's(21st Century) Arbor press with hydraulic pressure readout for bullet seating you are missing the BOMB!!! 00 times better than my old K&M with force indicator. 21st century has lots of cool toys!!! Sorry for the diversion!!!!!! JVON

Hijack continues... Every time I look at 21st's site, I think.. "man, there's some good thinking going on there"..

Ok, we are now returning to our regularly scheduled program..

^^ I knew I wanted one, I waited longer than I should, and kind of like the first GPS system I ever purchased I'm now thinking what an idiot I was not to buy one 2 yrs ago.

If you have to do very small volumes the Giraurd is overkill, but I'll never go back to anything else for anything bottlenecked.

I got the WFT MK2 with changeable inserts. Works great on the 223 and 308 I load for service rifle. Very happy with it. But it does require a pair of grippy gloves. I can do 100 308 in under 20 mins. With my son on the drill mounted chamfer tool, we can do 100 trimmed, primer pockets, chamfered in an hour, being careful to check measurements as we go.

Buy a seperate cutting head for each caliber, when you buy case holders and the adjusting is normally not needed anymore as you change both each time you switch cal.
Making some index marks for each cal, gets you close, if you not willing to buy seperate cutter heads for each cal.

And Jvon your absolutely right John Perkins makes great reloading equipment, still waiting for my hydro bullet seater though. Have 2,5 k worth of his reloading tools, and am satisfied with all the products so far.
The ss primer seater is the best out there, and case turning lathe is a brilliant tool, that gives me excellent results.

It depends on your budget really...

$30 or less = lee trimmer attached to drill

$70 and up = worlds finest trimmer - attached to drill

$70-$100 = forster, rcbs, case trimmer - hand crank

$250-$330 = Dillon trimmer, RCBS auto trim

$400 and up = Giraud trimmer mass volume for 223 easy trim for any calibers but its costly.
