looking for 1k yrd load developer 308win

Hi,
My name is Sam and I have an special request that i thought maybe you can help me with. I am looking for an expert, to develop a load/recipe for my custom target rifle.

Due to various personal reasons, primarily no time, due to many corporete business travels, I would like someone to develop a load for my 308win rifle out to 1000 yards, using the industry std ladder test.

If interested, please let me know on cost and timeframe and hopefully we can do business together. If not, can you recommend someone, equally competant.

Thank you
Sam

Hi,
I am located in San Jose/San francisco, N. Calif area. I am willing to travel within a day of driving.

What twist rate is your barrel?
anything in the 12 twist will handle the 155's, 168's to 180's.
I use the OCW instead of the ladder test, you use much less rounds.
here's a link http://optimalchargeweight.embarqspace.com/#
I'm in Texas, if I lived close by I would gladly help, anytime behind the trigger is always good.

Look up Deny Beauchamin on this forum (Bayou Shooter) ... He has a wealth of knowledge about the 308 as a 1000 yard competitor. Deny shoots A LOT at 1000 with his 308s and does quite well in the F-T/R spectrum.

I had 168 AMAX and 168 SMK's ringing steel out to 1040 just yesterday shooting with Dan Newberry, the guy who came up with the optimum charge weight, linked above. I think the AMAX is better at 1K than the SMK (168), but that is just my opinion. Send me a PM if you want the specs on my load.

Sam,
For whatever this may be worth, my shooting partner had a conversation with the experts at Sierra a few years ago during which they told him that the design of the 168 HPBT is for 100 - 300 yds and anything beyond that (300 - 1K) should be using a 175 gr SMK bullet as per their design. Several of my friends who shoot both Benchrest and F/TR competitions join in that belief as do I. And I can also safely say my handloads will outshoot any factory ammo and I've shot and tested all of them to obtain the best possible accuracy I can get out of my particular Bench .308.

BTW, check ur PM as I sent you info on an expert right there in San Jose who might be able to help out.

Alex

Sierra should have started putting a warning on the 168SMK box by now..

CAUTION: DO NOT USE THIS BULLET TO SHOOT FURTHER THAN 600 YARDS.

Quite frankly, if you don't have time to work up a load you are never going to have time to learn to read wind to 1000 yards.

bergers or a-max's for 1K, smk for shorter ranges in the 168grain levels
go to that link and there are some pet loads that will work in most rifles.
for factory ammo, Federal Gold match 168's or Hornady match are both nice, the hornady's would probably fly better beyond 4-500 yards, don't count out the Lapua scenars either.
if you can find the Hornady a-max bullets, buy all you can of the same lot.

While it is not my choice, many many people have shot it at 1,000 yards. It will get there (and further) OK.

I've been in the pits and seen them come in sideways, and shots that hit randomly all over the target. They may get there, but not necessarily in the black. Any experienced shooter suggesting that anyone use this bullet for 1000 yrd shooting is borders on irresponsible and definitely not helpful.

Exactly. If you don`t have time to shoot your own gun, you will never be able to read the wind. Just because someone can work up a load in your gun doesn`t mean you can shoot it as well.

He may not be able to read the wind (like you think he should) but if he is happy who cares...are you guys telling him not to compete because he doesn't have time? Bah.

Somebody help him out and let him have at it.

Well said. My thoughts exactly.
