Longer Range stuff

If you mean pistol calibers at long range, the best I can do is .40 S&W from a 5 inch long barrel at 50 and 100 yards. Long ago, USPSA had some classifiers that were shot at these distances. Felt more like “lobbing” at 100 yards. I’ve never shot a rifle caliber in a hand held firearm.

Yes; Rifle cartridges in bolt action “ specialty pistols” normally 16” barrels shooting at lets say 300 to 1000 + yards

I've taken close to 2 dozen deer from 500-565 yds. with my SSK 6.5/.284 XP with a Burris 3-12X BPlex handgun scope.
Used my friend's 7mm SAUM XP with a rifle scope on a deer at 719 yds. He did a pronghorn at 920 with it.
Any of the super long range shots with rifle scopes doesn't appeal to me. That's more just shooting than hunting.

Agree to me hunting is how close not how far. 37 deer with handgun all under 50 yards, 64 deer with bow all under 20 yards before my hunting days ended.
But now I like to just shoot as far as I can with hand guns
Thanks for your post

Is there any such thing as silhouette handgun competition anymore?
I'm thinking that would be great fun, -- and a great exercise of physical skill as well as handgun tech. jd

we are still going but down a lot in numbers I am in the middle of making up the 2026 master schedule but that probably will not be ready for another month. I always post the new schedule here:

these are my toys. since they are configured for IHMSA, they have less than 15" barrels.
in first Pic:
top is my XP100 in 7-08
Middle is an XP100 in 6br with 1-7twist
bottom is also a 6br but custom built by Ralph Bond

In second Pic:
Just because it was in the Pic, it is an Anschutz 64P in 22LR
Bottom is a Wichita silhouette Pistol in 7br

Thanks for posting the picture Dan, I’m trying to get the new handgun part the forum cranked up.

Kinda comical to say that 500-565 yards is ok but super long range isn't. Where's the line? Is it 566 yards? 600? My point is its completely subjective. Making statements like its not hunting is wrong. 100% WRONG. Just because its not what you prefer doesnt make it not hunting. Doesn't make it not ok. Its 100% fine if you prefer closer shots. I have my own limits and stick to them. By saying crap like "its not hunting" is making divisions within the hunting community which in the end will cost hunter dearly.
