Long throated 223AI

Has anyone long throated a 223 AI ?
I’d like to run 80.5 & 85.5 Berger’s at max mag length. Already have the dies & barrel coming, still not sure if I should throat it longer. Will be running Accurate Mag with the front notched out to take be able to use full length.

if you did throat, how much?
Would like base of bullet at shoulder neck junction

Gilbert, - The 223 A.I. that I have was throated for the 80.5 gr. Berger Full-Bore to have the bottom of the bullets bearing surface above the neck / shoulder junction. - I'm not sure what total COAL is but here's a screen-shot of the "Lead" dimensions. (0.100) - My intentions are to shoot 64 gr. through 80 gr. bullets in a 1-8 twist barrel. - 73 gr. Berger's have shot well with H-4895 & v/v N-133.
- As far as a really long throat to shoot 90 gr. bullets, there are some F-TR guys that have throated long to accommodate this but they are not magazine feeding the ammunition, they are single feeding.

That’s great info, thanks.
on my current 223 Wylde chamber I throated .090” extra to take full advantage of the mag & case capacity. Put me real close to .180” total freebore.
Looking for a reamer, already have a throater, need general ideas to max the throater.

really hoping to push the 80.5 or 85.5 in the 2900+ range

MINE SURE SHOOTS 80GR BERGER VLD'S AND 90GR VLD'S WITH .169 FREEBORE
VERY WELL 30'' 1/7 REM 40X SINGLE SHOT

My 223ai runs the 80.5 at 2888fps from a 21" 7tw rock creek. Sitting on 25.0gns of Imr8208xbr with Lapua brass and cci-450's for a spark. Nearly (25.2gn) identical load in my buddies 22"/7tw rifle shoots relatively well also... We both run notched Accurate mags. My COAL is 2.50 and you do not have to single load these with the notched mags in a bolt gun.[ ATTACH=full]1149505[/ATTACH]

me thinks you are wrong thinking.
these bullets are DESIGNED to be seated long and SINGLE loaded.
seated short and mag length you will run out of case capacity and then no velocity.
I think you're thinking about the wrong style of magazine. These are not AR mags that limit you to 2.260" or so, these are 223 AICS mags that run 2.55" from the factory (MDT polymer mags) or 2.600"+ (Accurate mag with notch modification OP talks about). If you're stretching a .224 bullet out much longer than that in a 223/223AI you're going to be running out of bearing surface for seating soon.

yes I missed his comment on mags in the original post.

My 223ai is a .100” freebore as well. With notched mags it is perfect for the 80s. Could get away with a little longer though

I had JGS make me a reamer with a .150 freebore and a .225 freebore dia. This works great for the 80 VLD's.
