Long throat - light bullets?

I'm going to purchase a prefit 6mm br barrel for my Savage. I want to have the versatility of an 8 twist to shoot light varmint as well as heavy, long range bullets. The problem is, 8 twist prefits have .116 throat. Will the long jump required to shoot the light bullets adversely effect the accuracy much?

Thanks.

Howzabout $$$ a custom barrel that is not " pre-fit ".

Then, you can have someone like Fred Moreo chamber/throat it
to suit your needs.

I have a 6mm Broughton SS 29" 1-8 "5-C" rifled barrel,
that James Peightal chambered for me, a 6mm wildcat of my design ).

I had Mr. Peightal " thoat it " to be able to accept up to
105-107gr 6mm bullets; where the bullets would be seated to a depth I felt would to be ok.

As it turns out, I have yet to shoot 1,000yd much, but instead the rifle sees more use on " live varmint "; and 100-300-500yd
" groundhog & egg " shoots.

A seated Berger 88FB, in my rifle/case ) does not quite reach the shoulder-neck juncture.

A seated Berger 90BTHP has its base right @ the shoulder/neck
juncture.

A seated Sierra 107Mk has its base slighlty below the shoulder/neck juncture.

In my rifle w/ my loads, I only am running bullets about .002" off the rifling. The only bullet I had to try and "jump"
, per its manufacturer's suggestion ) was the Barnes 85XXX.
Despite my best efforts, I could not get those bullets to group.

Other than the Barnes, I could get just about any other 6mm bullets to " shoot ".

Best, most consistantly good-grouping bullet in my rifle is
, very suprisingly ) Sierra 6mm 85BTHP "Gameking ". Go figure.
That, in a rifle chambered/throated for 107s; and with the 85gr bullets seated only some 1/2 down the case neck !

Best of luck in your endeavors.

357mag, how far off the lands did you seat the barnes bullets. they usually shoot very well between .050-.075 off the lands with one of the powders that barnes lists as best powders for said bullet and chambering. they will shoot around 1/2 min. in a capable rifle. just my observations, treeman

Keithcatfish: I've just re-barreled a Savage 10FP, 223 with Hart 1-8, Savage contour, and had it done the "old fashioned" way. Chamber was cut by my 'smith with my Pacific reamer, throated to the dimension I specified. .072" of freebore lets me seat bullets from 55 gr,V-Max) to 80 gr. Sierra HPBT, and a wide variety of weights in between, to touch the lands, with all of, or close to, the .224 bullet diameter near the base of the neck. There are probably some "pre-fit" makers who will give you the freebore you specify, but I believe others will tell you they have one "standard": take it or leave it. I chose to "leave it", and could not be happier with the results. I now have the ability to use lightweight,55 gr) for short range, 69 for midrange, and the 77 & 80 gr. for "longrange".

I tried those Barnes 6mm 85 XXX all th eway from jammed, out to
.1" off the lands ! AAAckkk ! I did everything the Barnes asked me to try. Used up the whole box trying to make good groups.

This all could be a function of my 6mm wildcat and rifle's throat. The Barnes were not all that far seated ino the necks. I was only able to squeeze the body of the bullet beneath the the bullet's bottom "groove". This was evidently, insufficient for consistent load pressure.

Just a thought.

The short answer is "probably". If you're only buying prefit barrels, get two in different twists and chambers for your purposes.
