6 BR/6 Dasher twist vs throat

When you set up a barrel, do you decide on a bullet and then decide on the twist and the throat length? I have about decided there is no one-size-fits-all. If I get a 8 twist and have it throated for the long bullets, it probably won't shoot 68 grains well because I'll have to jump them and if I throat it for the short bullets I'll lose case capacity with the long bullets. Is that about right? Do you give up accuracy using the faster twist on the light bullets?

bsekf if you are going to shoot the light bullets from 55gr to 70 gr i would recommend the zero free bore,it seems to work real well with any bullet in that weight range..once you go to the heavy bullets and a fast twist it can get more complacated as to the free bore..but if you are going with a 8 twist you are wanting to shoot the heavy bullet anyway...but don't think you cant shoot well jumping the bullets..i don't care what the experts say i have jumped them over .100 and they shot well..
So yes you need to know what weight bullet you want to shoot most of the time and that will determine what twist you need for the bullet, and the bullet length will usually dictate what free bore you need.

Bill,

I use 8 twist barrels exclusively on my 6-Dashers and 6BR's. Both my reamers are set up for .080 free-bore and it is a very good compromise for 68gr. to 105gr. bullets. I can reach the lands with both. Unless you are shooting benchrest the 8 twist is no problem. My 6BR will agg. under .250 with 87-V-max if I do my part. :P. Hope this helps. Paul.

i know what your trying to do cause i've had the same dilemma..the antidote is to make the barrel for what it is you'll do 'most'...
its better in the long run to have the rifle shoot best for your 'most'... rather then have it shoot almost good for both

on a second note you mite think of having two barrels made [ a switch barrel ] at the same time.. one light an the other for heavy
if thats what you need....

just my 2cents worth..

I think i will order a 6dasher reamer with a .120 free bore for the 105gr berger bullets. Most common 6dasher reamers for the 105 bergers seem to be closer to .104. i just dont think .104 is enough. My 6BR reamer will be closer to .070 i think. I will choose a 10twist 6mm blank for the 6br barrel i plan to do. I also think i will shoot 70grain-ish bullets in it. lee
