Long slide 1911

I'd like a longslide 10mm....maybe in a double stack.

Post up your likes and dislikes on longslide 1911s. Did the longer sight radius actually help?

Interesting configuration. What’s the intended use? Double stack suggests timed competitions (USPSA/IDPA) where the recoil of 10mm and increased slide weight will likely increase your split times. I can see where the increased sight radius of a long slide could be helpful in target shooting.

Target shooting. Hog hunt would be my hypothetical use case.

My custom long slide in 45ACP with major power lads worked fine. However, it has a hooked trigger guard and two 8 oz stainless steel grip plates under the grip panels with Smith and Alexander flat main spring housing and mag well. The added grip weight helps with the added barrel and slide length weight.

With practice, the two hand hold with a hooked finger adds substantial high speed sweep control. That draw and hold is automatic for me after 60 years of practice.

I had a custom Taurus 9mm Major long slide comp gun built years ago, due to its supported chamber and Browning safety. It worked real well with the 160 RN grain 38 stupid bullets. 16 rounds with one up the snout, was quite an addition in matches....

For hunting you should not need a double stack as a third round is usually not ever usable on a visible target and for matches all you need is to make major power level and a 45 will do that easy with a lot less fuss.

Oh, I had to drive over to Bill Roger's place, before he sold to Sifariland, and have him make a custom holster for my long slide for IPSC regulations. That is the other side, LS holsters are not common.

I built this 6” on custom CK frame and slide for USPSA competition years back. .40 S&W. As you can see it’s been lightened quite a bit so the slide would move quicker and isn’t quite so heavy in the hand. The bull barrel is also lightened with fluting. The long sight radius does help allot and it is extremely accurate. It will cycle ammo flawlessly and suspect a 10mm would be similar as I load .40 long to 10mm specs for better feeding. If you go with a typical long slide with a bushing barrel weight wouldn’t be unmanageable. Whatever you get, spend the money to put in a quality tuned trigger group. It will make a remarkable difference in how it shoots and the accuracy. This one is a glass crisp 1.5lbs break…

I went to the range today with my Custom built long slide 10mm on a Caspian/Foster frame with a Fusion slide and match barrel. I was just checking the new reloads I made. Extreme 200 Gr SWC on top of 13. grains of AA#9. 1.26 OAL. I love this load and love the gun.

I see you mentioned double stack. I would shoot one first before committing, a G21 I had was a terrible fit, way too large so I bought Lone Wolf frames and built customs on longer threaded barrels. 9mm size grip but still 13 rounds of 45 Super now which is a good hog round. Both have comps now as it makes a difference with Plus P and Super loads. IMG_0465.jpeg

I had a Springfield Loaded long slide for a number of years. I liked it. The additional weight moderated heavier loads and it shot well. My nephew was enamored with it and I never shot it so I gave it to him a couple of years back. He still has it and cherishes it.

Found a 6" slide 10mm single stack. Tried some Ammo Inc. FMJ that supposedly runs 12xx fps. Not bad kick at all, I like the long slide a lot. Only put a quick 20 rounds through it. No regrets yet. Hopefully it will put good groups down on paper.

I have 3 long slide single stack 1911s. 45 acp, 10mm and 9mm. Personally I like the extra weight. It helps with stability and absorbs some of the recoil. All of them are very accurate and the 9mm is a pure pleasure to shoot. The only drawback for me is that since I’ve gotten into suppressors recently I don’t know of any of the known suppliers (Ed Brown, Nighthawk, Les Baer, Jarvis, etc.) who offer threaded 6” barrels.

As this is a LS subject posting, this is my plate and pin gun, an early AMT that I rebuilt and have 400 hours in, to get it to be100% reliable. Has a 7" match barrel and bushing, Novak sights, bobbed hammer, a Videki trigger, ambi thumb safety, hooked trigger guard, ramp and chamber mods, two piece recoil spring rod, reverse cup, buffers, Safari grip safety, Smith and Alexander flared magazine well with flat main spring housing, 8 oz per side stainless grip plates. Wood grips by American Grips. The one pound added to the grips keeps the barrel level. I shoot 252 grain SWC bullets in it. It has a one of a kind Bill Rogers made Holster and matching two double mag pouches.

A while back I was thinking about doing a long slide 1911, but in 9mm.

I talked with a very famour 1911 smith, and he said if I really wanted a long slide, then I should skip 9mm because it's not enough to reliably cycle all the time.
