Long & Short Action Bolt Faces

Are the bolt faces the same for long action mags & short action mags?
I have a Savage 300 win mag, could I switch barrels and use a 270 wsm or would the difference in action length not allow it?

Yes. The problem with short action mags is in order to get the bullet out far enough to reach the lands, the shell usually won't fit the magazine. Also unloading loaded ammo can be a problem. I prefer to build on long actions. Matt

You can just swap barrels and be OK but WSM's RUM's and the like have primary extraction issues in Savage small shank receivers.

Large shank action is best.

Small shank barrels don't have as much meat around the chamber as the large shank.

Savage originally sold WSM's and RUM's on small shanks but right away had problems and switched to large shank.

I know someone with a original Savage Small Shank 300 WSM and has always had extraction issiues.
