long range varmint gun

Your max distance may be limited by your bullet's minimum impact velocity.
You may not get the bullet to open up like you want after it hits.
Some people can out shoot their cartridge/bullet combination.
Folks that have a Dasher with approximate same barrel length can give you a good idea of what your MV will be.

Who are you going to et to rebarrel your Cooper? I have a 22 BR that needs a faster twist to shoot heavies..
Henry rempel up in alberta canada. He's the guy that builds those cool ski pod bi pod things. I have a #17 krieger heavy varmint barrel 8 twist barrel that i am going to get him to turn down to a remington varmint contour. I phoned krieger and they said that was the smallest contour that it could be turned down to. Hopefully it works out. I don't think there is a aftermarket barrel that is available that will fit a cooper without turning it down. I could be wrong though.

I've been looking, but I think your right. It's hard to find a smith that will rebarrel a Cooper.

I phoned cooper and they were not even interested in shipping a barrel up here. They said only a complete rifle. While this is an awesome rifle i won't be purchacing another.

Yep, I should've bought a BAT action, barrel, stock, trigger, and had less in it than the Cooper price. Plus being able to work on it... I heard Bob Green works on Coopers....

Hi Jaybray. Shootdots has set you up with about the finest varmint opinion I possibly can even think of for the rifle caliber!

The Scope: In my opinion Sightron is one of the finest scopes money can buy, I own them and love them (Not a sponsor)! Also there proprietary technology is AWESOME!
As already said keep your power below 30, there is no real use for the high end, especially in your situation of target objects. Please keep in mind that kind of scope power on "Varmints" is good at some very long ranges!

The one area I would really consider is a "GREAT" range finder! They aren’t cheap but the dividends produced in "knowing" your range and dialling it in is totally unbelievable !

It will almost make you feel like the Alien predator in the "Arnold Schwarzenegger (spelling)" movie "Predator" !

I firmly believe they are all way overpriced as heck (what isn't), but they are a really valuable aid!!

I wish you a lot of luck and please return and let everyone know what you decided on and how it is working out for you.

Try a 6MM AI with a Leupold VX-3 8.5X25X50 w/ side focus and varmint reticle. It will shoot out that far very well and then some. See Richard Franklins write up in the rifles section of acurateshooter.com.

Thanks for the advice on the scopes guys. I have a sightron and no doubt an excellent scope I am going to grab another leupold though because any warranty issues can be fixed right here in Canada. I looked up the leupold 8.5x25x50 and I think that is the one I will buy.

Personally I would not worry about a so called Barrel burner with the type of varmint shooting you will be doing with this from your description

Couldn't you use a barrel for a small shank Savage work on a Cooper ? Either cut off the threads or use a blank.
I think the barrel is only 6 thousand's larger.

Jeff

Ya barrel life is not really of much concern to me but as far as calliber shes to late as i already bought dies and have lots of powder and bullets for a 6 dasher. Not sure about the savage barrel but i went a little overboard and bought 4 new Krieger 6mm 8 twist barrels when i had my 6br built so i just want to use them.

I'll post targets and maybe speeds this weekend on days off if it's not to windy. I've heard decent life(3000-3500) if you don't run light bullets at the speed of light lol Mines a 8 twist also

If you get 3000-3500 rounds out of that 22/6mm barrel then you ain't running it the way you should be running it!!!!!...... ;D

Nasty, you should be able to do better than 3200 fps with the 80 gr. bullets. I have a 22x47 Lapua and I get 3174 fps with the 80 gr. bullet with no pressure and I like the 80 gr. bullet better than the lighter ones. I have shot groundhogs past 500 yards and one deer at a little over 100 yds. (80gr. Amax) and that bullet really preforms very well. If it were me I would gun it up and not worry about barrel life.
