Long Range Varmint Calibers

I agree with LWolken, when shooting varmints at long range it will usually require more than one shot to make the hit and the 6BR is the perfect cartridge for this. The 6BR allows you to take multiple shots without the barrel getting hot. I have used both the 6mm AI and the 6x284 for long range varminting, they are both awesome cartridges. However, they get so darn hot after you make shot after shot making you take a brake between shots. With a 6BR you can continue to take shots without having to worry about the barrel melting. Another thing to remember, bullets like the 105grn A-Max, 105grn Scenar and 105grn Berger like to be shot between 2900 to 3000fps. That being said, you don't need a big 6MM to get the 105 bullets to that speed. The 6BR, with the right barrel length and powder, will get you to the 2900fps mark.

On Saturday, I made two 800+yard kills on squirrels with my 6BR. I was using a 105grn A-Max and it killed them on impact. At 825 yards with 20 degree incline, with the 105grn A-Max shot at 2910fps, it required 20 MOA of elevation to get there. The point I am trying to make is, you don't need a big 6MM to make kills on small varmints at long range. The 6BR will easily kill small varmints out to 1000 yards. Now, if your shooting varmints like Ground Hogs and Rock-chucks at ranges from 700 to 1000 yards, the bigger 6MM's would be my choice. The 6BR will do the job on these bigger varmints too, but 600 yards is max on these type of varmints for clean kills.

The 6BR is an awesome cartridge and is king in my book for long range varminting.

I'm shooting an A bolt 243 w/75gr VMax bullets, pushed by 46gr of IMR4350,24" bbl over the screens@3650fps.No pressure signs and very accurate.A faster twist would be nice if I had a choice but ER Shaw has a limited selection as far as that goes.
