Long Range Tactical/Hunting rifle

Gunsmith called yesterday "Your rifle is ready" Had him do the bedding on my Mod 70 with 26" Brux bbl in 7WSM to my new Precision Stock works stock. Shooting it today on the bench in photo turned out to be frustrating. Clean bbl, the load was 65.5 grs of Re#22 behind 162gr Amax . After fouling shots I was able to shoot a 3 SHOT GROUP easily covered by a dime at 100 yds. Then started shooting at same target at 280 yds. Group opened up more than I thought it would . Also was shooting at a Water filled Rock Star can at same distance . I was repeatedly missing ! Then I move the rifle back on paper target and it wasn't shooting like I hoped it would . Dang it ! I noticed I couldn't fit a dollar bill between the bbl and stock forearm ? I had a good rest,B&L 6x24x40mm scope that served me well on other rifles. Called gun smith and told him what's going on. He said bring it by and we will open up bbl channel some more and raised questions on the scope.Last group of the day was bigger ,also bbl had 40 rounds through it with out cleaning. Anyhow upon picking up my targets, that one water filled can at 280 yards I shot at a bunch of times that I thought I was missing ! It looked like swiss cheese ,I was hitting it, but it didn't blow up like 99.9% of water filled cans do when hit ? I'm going to change scopes and try again .

I would have reservations about a smith that bedded a rifle and didn't float the barrel. Did you just pick a load and hoped it shot? That never works, although 65.2 was the ocw load for my 7 wsm.

So, what is Tactical hunting? Would it help if should camouflaged your bench?

To qualify for this the gun must be ghetto flauged, weigh at least 16lbs, and require a fork lift to get to the deer stand.

I have nicked cans before where the water drained out and no matter how many rds. hit it after and nothing at all. Really makes you wonder what is going on.

It would not hurt to camouflage the bench but it is not necessarily needed. He has a good combo for accuracy and portability. Heck even when I had a AR50 40lbs I carried it into position without much problem.

My hunting gun weighs 45 pounds and we shoot that far the bench don't have to be camouflaged. Nice looking rig. Matt

Very nice looking rifle! I think free floating the barrel is going to make all the difference for you, it did with my rifle.

If it's a brand spankin new barrel and you unloaded 40 rounds down it without cleaning, it could be fouled up with copper. The reason why I guess that is because u said it shot good at first and slowly your groups opened up. After your smith gets the stock and barrel truly free floated you need to clean your barrel good. Look at the patches when using copper solvent and see how blue they are and how long it takes to get it clean without having blue patches. Better yet ask your smith to check the barrel out with his bore scope! Also check your rail, ring base and ring caps with a torque screw driver and make sure they are not loose and at the correct inch per pounds. ALWAYS start from the beginning and check the basics when trouble shooting. You need to work up a load too. Don't just guess a load and go shooting. Load up in .5 grain increments. I never shot this cartridge so I don't know what weight and seating depth to start at. I'm not a gunsmith and have zero gunsmithing knowledge. These are the things that I would do if I had the same problems that you are stating. Good luck bud!

You should have cleaned the barrel between groups to break it in and keep the fouling down. A brux barrel should not be a bad fouling barrel but you are shooting a lot of powder and the bullets are going fast. Big gun's need to be cleaned more often than say a 222 Rem. Also don't get the barrel hot as that will shorten it's life.

Try to tighten your scope and rings first! Try shooting her again.

No this isn't a new bbl. Only a New stock. I've probably have 400 rounds through the bbl and clean it usually every 30 to 40 rounds. Gunsmith did feel I needed to lighten my load. Waiting for gun smith to finish now.

Then I bet opening the barrel channel will make all your problems go away. Kinda wierd a smith would let something like that leave their shop.

I thought so also. But he's working on it now and said he will call in a couple days. He only 28 miles away, its nice drive out to his place.

It's great living my your smith isn't it? Mine is pretty well known and it takes me 15 minutes to get out to his place.

Good with the new stock and keep us in the loop when you get it back.
