Long Range Shooting?

How often do you guys dig out the Crono? Is your final load decision determined by it? When nothing trumps accuracy how necessary are they? Talking 600 yd & 1000yd competition

Since I dont get as much time to test as I would like, I often use a crony for working up a load. I know from experience that my 284 likes to be shot at 2820 fps (and at 2700fps as well), with 5 different barrels, but same reamer, case brand, bullet brand, primer, powder etc. When I get a new barrel, I will find a load which gets me 2820 fps (and 2700fps) and it is pretty much all mine needs to stay well in the X ring for verticle. If I switch to a new lot of powder, I will crony it again, along with some known accurate rounds with the old powder, to get it back up to the same speed.

With a new barrel, I will still try loads up or down from 2820fps .5gn either way, just to check.
If I am starting with a new caliber, I will use a crony to get the velocity close to what others are using, then try up or down a grain or so to see what the barrel likes. If it is not a barrel burning caliber, I might use a crony to check a few different primers, or experiment between .002 or .003" neck tension to check for velocity spreads with my particular chamber design, powder and cases used, barrel etc.

Loads for long range needs to have a ES as low as it can go. I like to see 20 or below.

I use the chrony every time I'm at the range and not competing...no other reason than it lets me build a good database of values. I believe that the more data I have, the more informed my decisions or reasoning will be.

I have just started keeping a database of all my competing scores - the theory being - my informed decisions should stack up in the comps :)

The jury is still out for me as to chasing ES/SD over an accurate load on paper....hopefully my approach above will answer it one way or another for me anyways.

Good Luck

Look for a load giving single digit SD.
Good chance that will give less vertical
which is what you are looking for out
past 1,000.
But again,
Accuracy Above All

I got one and I use it as much as possible... very interesting data comes from it. You really start to see the effect of Temps on Velocity, good data to have and to use... And it is a given, you will shoot one. So buy two, shoot one & get it over with..

Nodak, you are hilarious. I see your posts quite frequently, and as a rookie to the benchrest hobby I truly enjoy all of you out there and your useful, priceless information. I am shopping for a chrony and now it seems I should add two to the cart.
Looking forward to the next step........a rifle worthy of competition.
