long range scope

First time on forum. Lots of great info on this web site and
hope to be able to share some too. Looking for a rifle scope that does it all. Coyote hunting in Ar., dogs are skiddish at about 300yrds. Would like to have a scope to range and give holdovers too. Have spoken with horusvision several times about the falcon or predator. I have even thought about a shephard scope. But I would rather have one scope I can move from rifle to rifle using larue equipment. Is there a magic scope.

The scope I have on my go to coyote rig is the 6.5-20x50 LRT.

Most would consider the magnification too much for coyotes but at 6.5x on the low end it works for me. As far as ranging reticles, I just have a fine duplex and I use a laser rangefinder and dial if I have to.

A lot depends on the terrain you hunt. So..... for me.....
from up close & personal calling, to teaching a smart dog what is not a safe distance, my favorite is a Leupold 4.5-14 X 40 LR with the Varmint Hunter reticle, sitting on top of a 22 Dasher.

Thanks for the options. I just sighted in a loopy with the varmint ret for a customer, it is nice. Here within lies my problem, while I was zeroing a coyote came across the rice field below me and there I was without rangefinders. Those are the days I wish i could range with my scope. Now, how about custom turrets with ranges on them to dial straight too. Good idea or bad?

Here is a breakdown on using the "modified mil-ranging formula" for rangefinding with any reticle really,this example is regarding using the mil-dot reticle at a power that's different than the mil-calibrated power), but here's a link to the same system adapted for ballistic reticles under Item C) Reticle Rangefinding--

www.ottllc.com/specialtypistols/sp20.pdf

"Any reticle that has more than one stadia point in it can be used for rangefinding by using this formula,inches to yds.)--

tgt size,inches) X range of reticle subtension measurement,usually 100 yds.) / reticle subtension,inches) / quantity of reticle gap tgt. occupies,tenths of the total gap between stadia) = range,yds.)

Here's how it is applied referring to Call-em-all's example above,18" deer, and 3.6 inch per hundred yd. mil-dot subtension, where deer fills the dot to dot subtension perfectly @ 1.0 "subtension unit")--

18 x 100 / 3.6 / 1.0 = 500

If the 18" deer occupies .9 of the dot to dot subtension,bottom of most mil-dots to center of next dot)--

18 x 100 / 3.6 / 0.9 = 555

If it occupies 1.5 mil-dots it is 333 yds. away--

18 x 100 / 3.6 / 1.5 = 333

In CEA's example he uses a factor of 27.8,100/3.6 above). That is the "subtension unit" which is a factor any reticle subtension has at a given magnification. If someone has the 7-21X Bushnell MD,at 21X instead of the 14X where it's "calibrated") in my post above, and the dot to dot subtension is as i stated above then the new subtension unit becomes 100/2.4= 41.7, so now here's how the 18" deer would work with the 14X mil-dot std., that's recalibrated to the scope's highest power--

18 x 41.7 / 1.0 = 750.6

Now recognizing that 750.6 is the tgt. size to reticle subtension factor itself it can then be put into the calculator's memory to finish the ranging chart using a more usable system of reference--

750.6 / 2.5,2.5 mil-dots) = 300
750.6/2.4= 310
2.3=325

etc. to as far as u want to go. The exact same system can be applied with a plex reticle if one wishes. The mil-ranging formula is not specific to the mil-dot reticle. Any reticle can be used with the "modified mil-ranging" formula once it's subtension is known with varying degrees of accuracy.

I always apply my reticles at the scope's highest power since the smaller the subtension the more accurate reticle-rangefinding becomes".

Thanks for the info. I'll have to study this for a while but,I'll get it. At least I know that there is a way to use my scopes to the fullest. I have two bushnell 10x40md elite3200. One is on my .25-06 sendero the other is on my .308 vls rem 700.
I'm going to get me yrd stick and go to work.

Here's the range dope for your mil-dot 3.6" dot to dot for say an 11" coyote,back to brisket)--

11 x 100 / 3.6 / 1.0 = 300,actually 305.6)

...now suppose u have a predetermined point blank range on a coyote of say 250 yds. U can establish a "PBR rangefinder" with the mil-dot by just substituting the #'s into the equation recognizing that 11x100/3.6 is a constant of 305.6,put into the calculator's memory)--

305.6 / X = 250

X= 1.2

Now if the avg. adult 11" back to brisket coyote fits the mil-dot @ 1.2 subtension units or more, then he's within the PBR, and u can just aim dead center and shoot. Now we can finish the ranging chart as follows--

305.6 / 1.1 = 275

1.0 = 300

0.9=340

.8=375

.7=435

etc. to as far as u think it might be accurate. Of course u should know that coyote's nor any other game come in "1 size fits all", so don't expect it to work all the time.

Reticle-rangefinding offers a distant backup option to the laser, ONLY IF THE LASER DOESN'T WORK...IMO.

Thanks a lot. That is exactly what I needed to know to get to use my md scopes. I just didn't know how to go about getting there. I am looking to buy a new scope for another rifle. Is there any difference in mildot rets vs. moa rets? One of the horus scopes says it has smoa and some have moa. Whats the difference.

I haven't seen the tmr. I just tried to look at it on loopys web sit and didn't see a very detailed description of it. Can you explain it to me or give me a web site to look at it.

Never mind the TMR,to complicated for the need) look at the Boone and Crocket as well as the Varmint reticles in the Leupold line.
