Long Range Pistol Shooting

I can generally hit a 10-12” steel plate at 300 yards with 1-2 shots per cylinder out of my 4” 629. I don’t see why an outhouse at twice that distance would be overly complicated.

I used to shoot around 450 yards at steel drums with a 8 3/8 " S&W 29. Good hit ratio. And easy to walk your shoots onto the target in the coal strippins`. Tired eyes would make it a real challenge now. Oh, steel drums were the idea that birthed steel plates, they were free and you could roll them where you wanted them. Have a great Sunday, Jeff

The specialty that I have and had would regularly cut bug holes in paper at 100 and 200 yards.

The main reason some like these guns is the challenge of shooting them accurately. No butt stock to rest your face on to align ones eye with the scope. Gripping the gun consistently is more critical then with a rifle. The strange looks one gets at a gun range and the disbelief when they see bug holes on the targets.

Unfortunately I didnt make it to WY-shot this year but last year aftet the match we were shooting out to 2450 yards.

Before the match we were also shooting steel at Mac's Gunworks shop out to 2200 yards, lots of fun

Typically the same week as WY-shot a bunch of us go to the MOA cold turkey 1000 yard pistol match. Bench shooting 500, 750 and 1000. Its a great week shooting pistols

For me learning to shoot a specially pistol accurately is a lot more challenging than a rifle. I can't shoot bench rest standard, but for my abilities an .5 group at 100yds is and was a great accomplishment with my Savage Striker, Thompson Contender, or my Encore 15" 223 .
I would venture to say most of the (professional) shooters here would try it they would find out what a challenge it is.

Kieth shot a hunters wounded mule deer at 600 yards running up hill was quite the talk at the time. using his 4in smith 44.

I looked on that page and did not see a single SBR on that page. I know what you are referring to but many do not.:(

About 20 Years ago, the sport went through the Benchrest Pistol phase. The Editor of the Magazine that was the mouth piece for both the NBRSA and IBS went all in. Just about every edition promoted it.

Kelbly, Wichita, and a few others brought out actions for the Discipline, (Had to originate as a pistol), as well as original XP-100’s. It got real big, and then just disappeared.

I have a good friend at the Tomball Gun Club that has about ten of these “Benchrest” pistols. He takes them prairie dog hunting as well as shooting them in our Club Matches.
He has a ball with them.

I know legally they're pistols but imo if you cant shoot em 1 handed they're not "pistols" in my book.

I never understood why the sport of IMHSA went "out of style" since the 80's. It seems now everyone is too interested in blazing fast speeds at 10 yards, and precision shooting at long range bores people. Not me, I want it to come back!

Go to ihmsa.org to locate a club that has matches in your state if you want too go to shoot or just watch.

Here in Michigan were I live, there is just one club that host IHMSA events, but it is about a four hour drive for me. There is one club in Ohio that also host IHMSA events, but again it is about a four drive for me. Back in the 1990s there was a club a club relatively close to me, but the club lost its lease on the land and had relocate to land that does not allow a 200 yard/meter range, so the sport kind of died out for me which unfortunate because I really loved the sport. When I would shoot a 40x40 score and the win the tie off, I felt on top of the world.

As a side note. In Europe, IHMSA is popular, and in South Africa there is a big invitational IHMSA event held every year, but not to many Americans go there to compete. I would guess it would be to costly to fly there and pay for lodging, food, and transportation, and dealing with customs both in the U.S. and Africa. I once read about a team were the South African customs confiscated a teams firearm for some reason. Some of the other teams lent firearms to those people so they could compete.
