long range hog gun

at ranges greater then 300 to say 600 yards what are your thoughts on a round for hunting the groundhogs?
given that what would be a good custom rifle for the round?
thank you for your thoughts.

My two favorites are 6XC and 6SLR which are both good to 1000 yards or more.

Out to 600 yards, the choices are almost limitless as long as a mid to high BC bullet can be stabilized.

I have regular success to 600 yards with a standard 220 Swift or 22-250 and 55 grain bullets. That is getting into "no gas" zone though. A 6BR and a 105 or even 87 grain, 600 no issue.

Of course the bigger 6mms will do it even better. But I never feel under gunned with my 22-250 or Swift at those ranges on chucks. Farther, yes, but to 600, nah.

For Chucks you build the rifle for the bullet and necessary terminal velocity/ballistics at your expected maximum range. At your maximum of 600 yards there are a slew of possibilities. I, and many others, have had great success with the .22 and 6mm A-Max bullets with their high BC and explosive terminal ballistics. I don't know the availability of them after Hornady's change however I have hoarded enough to put a big dent in the population. Look at the leader board in mid-range competitions and that will give you a good choice for known accurate cartridges to choose from. For actions there are a bunch of good ones to choose from and there is no reason for a repeater for Chucking. I have a Borden Rimrock and love it and Jim being a PA boy made my choice easy. That said, I've killed and kill a bunch with Savage actions also but trigger choices are tougher. JMHO

Just about ANYTHING in 22 center-fire thru the 26s will get ur done. Pick your poison and have a ball. I have a bunch between those numbers and they all do fantastic in those ranges.

If there's a chance you might have an opportunity there in Pa for a 1,000yd kill on a " Soybeanus Digestus ", I recommend you consider setting the gun up as 1,000yd-capable. You can always apply the rifle @ shorter distances than that, which would be most of the time.

I've taken my share of heat for my continued suggestion of using
450ft lb as a minimum energy threshold guideline. Do you always need that much for a clean kill.....no. At the same time, always having at least that amount deliverable @ the intended range will stand you in good stead. Pick the combo's that can give you that.

You're probably looking @ a rifle w/ a barrel and chambering that will give you an " expansion ratio " between 4.5 - 6.5 . Having said all that, a .22-250 or a Swift shooting 55's out of a 24" barrel would not be a great choice for 600; as an example.

I've ran the same exercise myself, on how far out I could deliver 450ft lbs; using a rifle chambered in .250 Savage. The picture was not all that great, for use @ 1,000.

I currently shoot my DEEP 6 wildcat, which is capable out to 1,000yd; whether that be for varmint or target. Now, if I can just get the opportunity to apply the gun @ those ranges. Hopefully, on a future PD shoot ? My point: when the time comes for 1,000yd action, I'll have the gun to do it.

One thing about chuck hunting that really gets you going is seeing those gut rugs fly like they were T'd off by Tiger Woods! I don't care much for guns that just kill them on the spot like the wind was sucked out of them.

When you get old and can not get out anymore, you will still be able to see those gut rugs doing helicopters, twirly gigs, end over end, and super twists in your mind's eye! So, why not go out and make some memories!

I have killed them with everything from 17Mach 4 to 270 Winchester.

Several combo's really get you to love chuck hunting:

6 Remington with a Hot load of IMR 4064 with a 80g Sierra Blitz BT at 3600 fps, shoots bug holes.

243 AI with a hot load of Win 760 using the 70g Blitz king at 3850 or the 75g V max at 3800, cci 250, shoots very tiny groups.

6 Rem AI with the 70g sierra blitz king at 4000+, 14T may get you into the 4150 fps like it did with my last Shilen barrel, you would think you were shooting a 6 ppc.

6 Rem AI with 80g Sierra Blitz BT, R#19, Win primer, 3800 fps

6 Rem AI with 75g V max at 3700-4000 fps,12 or 14T(Richard Franklin's load). Richard settled on around 3700+, but with win 760 it is all over 4000 fps with better barrel life than N550.

I had zero freebore on all my reamers above.

A std Rem 700 sporter loaded with IMR 3031 will shoot bug holes with a sierra 90g Hp(3550), and you will see full grown chucks detonate like a paint ball on a flat wall!

I have had hit and miss luck with the 75g 6mm v max when it comes to shooting bug holes, never on a Sierra 70g blitz king because they have a match quality jacket.

I shot a slug with a 22/250 AI and Swift, but they are not in the class of the big 6's when it comes to slinging them over the clothes line. A 22/243 AI in 12T will shoot the 60g V max at 4000 fps into bug holes....this is some horse power when it comes to Rug slinging.

One of the ultimate may be a custom 257 Weatherby shooting the 90g Tipped Sierra at 4100+ in a 30" 10T or 12T that has zero freebore.

Make some memories, and take some pictures! Never leave home without a camera!

I can testify that a 243 pushing a 87 v-max is death on p-dogs at those distances. I'm sure a groundhog would suffer the same fate.

When it comes to killing ground hogs, I'm with AckleymanII. Watching them launch from their mounds or alfalfa patch is what gets my blood moving. Sure it's not likely to happen at 700,800,900+ yards with almost any cartridge. Typically it's the 300-350 yard max range that you get these results, in my experience. I also do not buy into the certain number ft lbs energy for varmints. My 17 hmr has about 225-250 ft lbs at the muzzle with a 17 grain bullet. I blow up ground hogs regularly at 200 yds and still cleanly kill them at 300. I'm sure the energy at 300 is double digits. Still dead as if hit with a lapua mag. Bottom line, who says you only need one gun to kill anything ? Ive taken 3-4 guns on hog shoots. Shots from 100-1000 yards may require a couple different guns but thats ok with me. I typically like using my deer gun as it gives me experience in wind and range in preparation for deer season but I love the explosive results on ground hogs with the little 22 Cal grenades. Who doesn't ???

I started with the 22-250 40 years ago. I tried a 243 for a change. the 70 gr bullet worked much better than 22 cal bullets. I have done the big 6mm's, 6mm , 243, and the AI versions. I now shoot 6mm BR. I like the 70gr. Blitzkings or 87 gr Vmax. The 87 gr Vmax is the best varmint bullet made. It kills like a lighting bolt.
