One thing about chuck hunting that really gets you going is seeing those gut rugs fly like they were T'd off by Tiger Woods! I don't care much for guns that just kill them on the spot like the wind was sucked out of them.
When you get old and can not get out anymore, you will still be able to see those gut rugs doing helicopters, twirly gigs, end over end, and super twists in your mind's eye! So, why not go out and make some memories!
I have killed them with everything from 17Mach 4 to 270 Winchester.
Several combo's really get you to love chuck hunting:
6 Remington with a Hot load of IMR 4064 with a 80g Sierra Blitz BT at 3600 fps, shoots bug holes.
243 AI with a hot load of Win 760 using the 70g Blitz king at 3850 or the 75g V max at 3800, cci 250, shoots very tiny groups.
6 Rem AI with the 70g sierra blitz king at 4000+, 14T may get you into the 4150 fps like it did with my last Shilen barrel, you would think you were shooting a 6 ppc.
6 Rem AI with 80g Sierra Blitz BT, R#19, Win primer, 3800 fps
6 Rem AI with 75g V max at 3700-4000 fps,12 or 14T(Richard Franklin's load). Richard settled on around 3700+, but with win 760 it is all over 4000 fps with better barrel life than N550.
I had zero freebore on all my reamers above.
A std Rem 700 sporter loaded with IMR 3031 will shoot bug holes with a sierra 90g Hp(3550), and you will see full grown chucks detonate like a paint ball on a flat wall!
I have had hit and miss luck with the 75g 6mm v max when it comes to shooting bug holes, never on a Sierra 70g blitz king because they have a match quality jacket.
I shot a slug with a 22/250 AI and Swift, but they are not in the class of the big 6's when it comes to slinging them over the clothes line. A 22/243 AI in 12T will shoot the 60g V max at 4000 fps into bug holes....this is some horse power when it comes to Rug slinging.
One of the ultimate may be a custom 257 Weatherby shooting the 90g Tipped Sierra at 4100+ in a 30" 10T or 12T that has zero freebore.
Make some memories, and take some pictures! Never leave home without a camera!
