Long-Range Coyote Setups

I use a no frills 223 Rem and 243 Win., both Rem Model 7's with custom barrels.

The 223 Rem has a 20", No. 2 contour, 12" twist barrel for shooting 55 Nosler BT's.

The 243 Win has a 20" Hart, No. 3 contour, 10" twist barrel for shooting 85 Sierra BTHP.

I like the smaller Model 7 rifle package since I frequently change stands if nothing is responding to my call. Also, I hunt a number farms in eastern PA where the shots tend to be less than 300 yards.

My main is a blue printed 700 20 tac firing 39 blitzkings at 3900. New load this year will be 35 bergers at 4000 fps for fields of 350-400 and less. Then 400+ I have my custom 6creed pushing 105’s at 3130 FPS and the new for this season 25 creed pushing the 131’s at 2900.

Picture is of 25 creed. 6mm and 20 are in the midst of a make over. The 6 was originally wearing a manners t5, and the 20 had a vls laminated stock but have since sold the manners. I have a vudoo coming this week and the stocks that I need to shift between the 3 rifles are mpa comp, krg bravo, aics 2.0 and htg adj. so I believe the 6 will get the mpa, the 20 will get the htg and the 22 will get the krg or aics

6.5 Grendel, after all it's just a coyote
I'm hauling my 338 LM Imp to deer camp in the UP this year. Threw together some loads using 230 eldx bullets around 3000 fps. Slow for 230s but plenty for a whitetail. Figure I'll probably see some coyotes as well. More than likely wolves also. Boy, it'd be a shame if I mistook a wolf for a coyote. I'll have to have a good buck down on my first tag before pulling out the 338 for tag#2. I'll play with some coyotes if I get to tag#2. Nothing is too much for a coyote. They deserve all you throw at them

The rifle and caliber is just one part of the puzzle... how do you guys plan on shooting a coyote way out there.... bipod... sticks... truck hood... etc etc... how are you going to hold that weapon tight enough to shoot a dog way way out there? To me... that is a BIG part of the puzzle... and judging the range as well... and adjusting your turrets.... how are you going to pull all that off when calling in dogs? I guess baiting is a no brainier.... but not the same as the action of calling them in. But then again.... the OP only mentioned long range.... so weapons alone do count.

I use a Daniel Defense DDM4V9 with a 4-16x50 Vortex with illuminated reticle and a Wicked light. works damn good. Atlas bipod(edit bipod in pic is Harris)

I use a Mcfadden tripod that I pack on my quad in summer and on snowmobile in winter. It is a pain to pack but nothing is as steady a rest that I have used so far. Also a bi pod is no good where I am at in winter as the snow is too deep. Foxpro brings them in but more often than not at close range instead of long. Seems harder to get a long range shot than a close one. Check out Dartman 76 on Youtube. He is the guru of long range coyote shooting.

majority of my sets ups are properties I rotate through, with accurate ranges measured before the caller comes on. You ever have a coyote hang up on you and not want to come in no matter what sound! That’s were the long range comes into play. Even when I take out my long range rigs out, I still try and call them in and majority of shots are 150 and less. But didn’t stop me last year on a coyote that hung up at 570 and just sat there, I was prepared and got the dog

I put together a medium sporter 22 Creed earlier this year. Loaded 60 Sierra TMK’s at 3725. Seems to shoot well, but haven’t shot a coyote with it yet.

Love that 60 TMK--always thought that'd be just the right AR weight for sniping coyotes to the effective range of the 223. When I use the 69 TMK I'm using the old DPMS VLD magazine that allows me .25ish" more OAL. Great system, the designer of which hangs out here at 6mmbr.

I use a soft-sided stadium seat that's been customized some by shortening the side straps for a tighter fit, attaching another snap at the end for hands-free carry and covered with burlap for good camo. In conjunction with a taller Harris it's very steady (and more importantly comfortable) from sitting to as far out as I can expect a first-shot hit on a 5-6" diameter broadside vital-zone coyote. I walk long distances when hunting coyotes and my chit has to be portable.

Central/north central PA here.

I like my 25 calibers.
Ruger77 MKII in 257 Roberts shooting 90gr BlitzKings at +P.

Second rifle is Stevens 200 with 24" E.R. Shaw barrel in 250 Savage with the 90gr BlitzKings.
Took out 3 of a family of 4 the other month. Start distance 200 yards on mom.
225 on first pup.
Second pup at 375.
Not LONG distance, but they work.

The FurMaster©; 22-250, Savage target action, 28” Shilen 8 twist, McRee chassis, 80g Berger VLD @3250fps

20 PPC on a howa mini. Muller bbl and 39 SBK at 3925fps. Have not shot a yote yet but my zero is 270yrds (1/2moa groups at this range, perhaps better if I get a good no wind day) and should be shooting 0-320 yards with +/- 2.0"

Will admit I have not shot a yote yet. Just finished it last month.

We don't have coyotes over here in Oz, but red foxes are the closest thing we have around my way, you can get dingoes and wild dogs further north. I like the swift, but I also have a 6AI. Bloke I know who used to shoot a lot of dingoes and wild dogs swears by the 25/06 with 87g speers. Another mate runs a 25WSSM with 75gr pills and that really irons them out.
I think it really depends on range. I got the 6AI because one of the properties I shoot is quite steep and 400+ yard shots aren't uncommon. If they are facing away or the angle isn't perfect, a lighter caliber won't anchor them. Had them run off when hit with the swift from behind or a poor shot with a 17 fireball/17 rem. The heavier bullets in 6mm really mess them up.

Tikka T3X lite .22-250 or 700 ADL in .243...both are bone stock except for the krylon rebuild, strangely I don't have a pic of the Tikka.

Blaser R93 with a custom 6XC in a 20" barrel. 70gr BlitzKings at 3300fps, suppressed. Kills like a lighting bolt out past 500 yards. I run a Mil-dot Trijicon 3-9x Accupoint and just holdover from my 300 yard zero.

In Iowa I seldom get a shot past 300 yards. Unlike many of my friends, I don't waste time trying to call them in closer, when I spot them, I drop them. Before I start calling, I have my range card filled out. When I'm out west, it's a Blaser R8 with it's 6.5x55SE semi-weight barrel with 130gr Berger's, I have connected out past 800 yards with this one several times. Usually on coyotes feeding on dead animals in the day time. Interesting that when I'm shooting varmint's with the 130gr 6.5's, I feel like I'm throwing javelins at them.

Thought I'd mention that I often carried them to the closest fencepost to skin them but that's not as easy as it once was and I figured out how to skin them from the ground past couple of years--helps a lot.
