If you cannot narrow your list any smaller than what it is in the 2nd reply in this thread. Maybe you need to wait a while before you build a gun. If you buy a plain Jane rifle and shoot it some, and try some different ranges, and shoot with different people, it wont be long you will know what you want. You really don't need anyone to pick a cartridge for you. If some body picks for you, you get what they want not what you need.

really great advice given here already. Focus on parameters: 1) not enough recoil to teach you bad habits 2) doesn't require too frequent cleaning 3) allows you to have fun, heat it up a bit, without burning up the bbl prematurely 4) accurate and forgiving 5) 'man-portable' without blowing a disc 6)usable across multiple domains. 6.5x47L, 130 bergers and you will be covered. You will be able to use this for targets at your range, and also varmint and hunt with it all in one. Or I would suggest the 6br for lighter recoil at the expense of a little more wind drift and diversity in hunting, but it still makes a stellar varmint round anyway.
