long range calibres

What's the concensus of the best overall cal for long range
shooting...I'm talking 1000yds to a mile. Will the 6.5x284
outrun a Lapua 6.5x47? Not interested in 30 cal.
thanks

Sandy

Of course the 6.5x284 will out-distance the 6.5x47. Bigger case = more powder = higher velocity.

If you're talking distances beyond 1000 yards you'll need an even bigger case and since you've ruled out the 30 caliber and bigger, you've effectively eliminated the cartridges that are best suited to the extreme distances unless you go with one of the extremely over bore wildcats.

Have you done much shooting beyond 1000 yards?? That's a loooong way.

any of the Big 7mms RUM,Lazzeroni, wildcats based on them with hvy. vlds. would work but barrel life is short typically 700-900 rounds,if that). My factory Rem 7mmSTW was gone in less than 600 it's Hart replacement has 270 rnds.on it at this point, its been on for almost 3 yrs now. It's strictly a hunting rig now.BTW the Hart barrel is superbly accurate

I herd of a new cartridge, The 416 Barrett It is supposed to be just as good as the 50BMG if not better and it is legal in California.

50cal necked to 416.. it is awesome, from I understand.. has already scored a one shot direct hit at 2500 plus over in the desert!

does the question pertain to Caliber or cartridge?

Depends on the circumstances, whether competing or not, and what discipline.

6BR with 105 Bergers is very accurate to a mile - yes a mile. I shoot to a mile on our property frequently and it is excellent under calm conditions. The 6X47 is also proving to be very easy to shoot to a mile accurately as well.

6.5X284 is still a fantastic 1000 yard cartridge and the 7WSM is showing excellent results. When you get out to those distances, it takes way more than just a good cartridge. Meticulous load prep, brass, barrels and shooting skill are essential. Fast, Heavy, High BC, and inherent accuracy are the keys.

If you want to shoot to 1,000 and beyond without going to a magnum 30 I think the 7MM WSM is probably the best choice.

I have a 300 WSM, a 6.5 X 47 Lapua & a 7MM WSM all set up for long range precision.

The 6.5 X 47 Lapua starts to get a little weak velocity wise around a 1,000 yards.

The 7 WSM can shoot very high BC projectiles and has good downrange performance with Berger 180's.

You may also want to consider a 260 Ackley Improved.

Im going to have to Echo Mark and Obtunded about a good 7mm.

I used my 7mm Rem Mag out to and a little beyond one mile. The 6.5X284 I have also used up to 1620 yards. but it will go the distance.

I purchased a Balistics program and starting playing with it to see what will and what wont be super sonic at 1762 Yards. Low and behold I already had a rifle in my stable that would make the shot.

A couple of buddies came out with a 300 WM and a 243 WSSM Improved and made hits also.

Do your home work and see how much elevation you have on your gun. Sometimes a 30MOA base is handy., Ken Farrel)

all are pleasant to shoot and get the job done.
