Long range Ar, rings or mount?

Cory porter

I am going to be getting a scope for an 18in Ar to shoot off a bench or prone. It has a Magpul prs adjustable stock on it and I plan to get something in the 50mm range. 6-24x50 or similar.

Any suggestions on how you would mount it?

My favorite set up is a cantilevered one-piece picatinny 1/2 inch riser and Burris Signature Zee rings. I have several AR's set this way. I'll see if I can find a picture. If I can't, I'll take a pic and post tomorrow.

So tempting to just answer... on top. Ok, got it out of my system.

And,
I strongly suggest the Burris XTR Signature rings, not the cheesy split base original Signature rings.
All the Signatures allow you to align the scope center with the bore, within reason, and also to add or
subtract elevation, so your flat riser/cantilever can become the equivalent of up to a 40MOA mount,
but the XTR's are so much better, wider, with more screws, and a real base attachment shoe .

i cannot agree with the poster on the basic original signature insert rings from burris. i use tons of them. i have won a national long range championship with them. yes the new xtr rings are bigger and heavier, and i have ONE set. but do not ignore the originals

Nightforce / Badger / MK4 rings all work great.
If you need extra elevation, then maybe get a 20 moa 1-piece mount.

start with some definitions
an 18" ar aint a long range rifle in my book, what is long range ??
ar in what cartridge ??? what bullet weight/maker ?
as a reference point, the navy SEALs used a nf 5.5-22x on their accuracy international 300 win mag bolt guns...that is listed as a 1200 yard rifle with shots taken much longer
we just need some reference points

Cantilever mount. No reason to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Can’t mounts are developed around scoping an AR and it will be perfect for a 50mm with ring caps

Not trying to complicate things, it’s a prone ar that going to be used for fun. When I said long range it’s the style of the build. I’m not a navy seal shooting a 300min mag.

18in 223 shooting 69g bullets out to 600 as a point of reference. The post is more how do people mount their 50mm objective scope on an Ar

I’ll take a pic of mine shortly for reference

the cantilever mount will get you 1.5 to 2" above rail like you'll want on AR platform.

Sorry for the crappy pics. It’s a long range AR. I shoot 70s and up in it. Had 750 yard hits in comps with 77 SMKs. It gets hard shooting past 800 though.
