Long range 6mm varmint cartridge?????

IMHO, If your going to "Walk" with it get the smaller 6s 243, 243 AI, 6xc etc., If you shoot from a fixed position get the 6 -284 put a LONG HVY BBL on it and pace your shots.

seems to me i remember a fellow from Georga that won the shumway cup and beat mr. tubbs and some other notable shooter using a plain jane 243..... not the gun but the brass and caliber .... 115 grain clinch river at about 3150 fps..... i believe the others were shooting a 6xc and a 6-284.... he liked the idea of the 243 AI but thought the plain 243 would feed better in his action...... we are talking 1000 yds.
i kicked around all the ideas and crunched the numbers and could not come up with bigger being any better ..... that is.. for varmiting and hunting as this thread is all about not paper punching..... 70 grain seems to be a magic number for the weight of both speed and wind bucking in the field.... you can load a 243 AI 10 twist and a straight 6mm 12 twist both to very close to 4000 fps with a 70 grain and that is just dandy for running yotes.......and it doesn't blow too big a hole................ now that i think about it that story is printed right on this forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course everybody's got a favorite, but....

Kinda the proper way to do it is to pick the bullet/weight class you want to shoot,(I wouldn't pick just one bullet, just in case), the speed you wanna shoot it, and the pick the case that will do it with sane pressures. It depends on the platform you're gonna run it out of too, short, long, magazine fed, single shot, etc, and needs to be throated accordingly.

It cost money to go fast....... how fast do you wanna go???

Good post and good advice Alf! And one should not worry about barrel longevity, as all the hot rods are going to be toast at 1500 rounds and many of them way before that. Speed costs money, but speed kills also. Thats the price we pay for wanting something different.

HELLA FAST!!!!!!!!!! ;D

I really like the 6-284 idea...good brass, easy to form and SPEED!!!!!!

I believe the 87 V-maxes would be LOT`s of fun in this one...

The gun will be a BAT action, either MB or M, depending on cartridge chosen, single shot, long barrel, fired from a bench, and HEAVY as i don`t care too much for recoil.....

BUT......I`m still open to discussion.....I.E. I havn`t made up my mind yet....

All I have is short actions to work with so a 6-284 is out of the question f

Mike

why do say that the 6-284 is out? I have the 6-284 in a 6mm ruger sa m77 and i dont have any issues with the bullets fitting the mag.I am using 85gr barnes tsx bullets. so i really dont see an issue using a SA rifle JMO.

Doug,

They are probably talking about usingthe longer bullets and having issues with them.........

Just a guess...

the longest coal that hodgen has for the 6-284 is 2.800 using a 105 GR. SPR SP or 107 GR. SIE HPBT and that is the longest they list and i have tons of room in the mag area.

the 6mm has some rounds that are 2.950 coal for the same bullets. Unless there are different length sa magizines for different manufactures idk what the issue can be.but then again i am not an expert in this field just a beginner to low novest at this.

You can put the LONG heavy bullets in the 6-284 case. It's just eats up powder space if you seat them (IN) to use in a SA magazine like Remingtons.

I don't know if this was mentioned yet but look at the 6mm Crusader. George at GA Precision is chambering these and has Redding dies on the shelf for them. Its a 6mm Remington without all the body taper but he leaves the neck and shoulder alone. Give him a call he will gill you in

another vote for the 6-284, 105 berger vld 15 thou into lands, rel 22 51.5 gr, 3400 fps dead ghog at 532yds..poa=poi. better in the wind than smaller cases: 6br 6brx 6xc, 6ax47 lapua ,6dasher. it will burn barrel, but i only "pull it out" when the range is long or windy. my 243 ackley with 80 bergers or 80 fowlers is backup...same velocity but a little more sensative to wind.
if i can see you, i can touch you.BANG!

Phil, I'd recommend the 6-284 or the 6xc. But if you really wanna know.... ask Roger. ;D WD

The most overlooked cartridge is the .243 Winchester Super Short Magnum (WSSM). I built one on a Savage Precision Target Action, with a Brux barrel with the Savage Varmint contour from Sharp Shooter Supply. The pre-chambered 1:8" twist 26" barrel screwed right on with a headspace gauge and swap in of a magnum bolt head, firing pin and baffle. Using the 62 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade (these are .974"-.981" long even though they weigh 62 gains), alfalfa stuffed Oregon sage rats simply disappear - turn to pink froth. Groups run in the .2's to .3's depending on wind and shooter. I am simply amazed at the accuracy and consistency considering I do nothing to the Winchester brass other than uniform primer pockets, flash holes and load. No neck turning, nothing. 49.5 grains of Ramshot Hunter produces 3,580 fps with a Wolf or Winchester standard large rifle primer.

I built this concoction when the 6mm PPC proved too small to drive lead free bullets fast enough. The .243 WSSM mimics the PPC case shape but provides nearly double the powder capacity. For the single shot action the cartridge poses no problem, although using a magazine will require some work. This thing out shoots my Cooper 6.5 -284, a couple of different .204 Rugers, and every other rifle I have.
