Long range .308 powder...IMR 8208XBR OR Varget

Ok so IMR 8208XBR or Varget for .308 for best groups at 600 + yards with 175gr SMK HPBT and a 1:12 Remington heavy varmit barrel?

When I was shooting my 308 win Varget was best for velocity, Imr 8208 gave best accuracy, with Varget right behind it when shooting 168's. Varget and 175's would work well together.

I was interested in 8208 for 223 and 308 but what I've read in a few places is that 8208 is only good for 155's. After reading that in several places I thought AR-Comp would be better suited. I'm dizzy from all the reading and different powders.

Dont't shoot 8208 in my rifle but Varget pushing a 190 SMK at 600 and a 185 Berger at 1K works best for me. My barrel is 30" 1/12 Krieger.

Everybody has find what works in their rifle. Reading and trying what several people have had success with is a good place to START but may NOT work for you. I like to use the "ladder test" as it shows what the gun is doing on the target and it may take more than one time at the range with the same load to have confidence in your selection.

Don't over look primer selection. Each combo can "like" a different primer. I was looking for the best load in a 223 using IMR4895 powder as I had a good supply of it. I did "ladder" testing at 400yds using four primers. I tryed 205m, 71/2, win SLR, and Wolf srm's and Wolf's came out with the best ES for my gun.

Using 8208 for 155 - 185s. No problems, great accuracy. Varget will probably net more velocity, however 8208 has been so accurate and consistent I have not used varget in my .308 yet.
