Long range .22 lr ammunition

Hi folks,

There seems to be more and more shooting of .22lr at longer ranges (100, 200, 300 and even further).

A while ago Cutting Edge brought monolithic, slippery bullets for shooting at long range: https://cuttingedgebullets.com/shop/cutting-edge-bullets/22lr and even reloading .22lr

Well, RWS are bringing out a new long range bullet for shooting at 200yds +: https://rws-ammunition.com/en/infot...-2022-new-rimfire-cartridge-r-plus-long-range

Be interesting to see how they stack up next to each other.

Scrummy

43grs, 1165 fps
The cost will be interesting to learn. In the sectional profile I don't understand the little "tab" at the base.

Heel based bullet, if that's what you're talking about.

Never mind just saw the picture, has to do with aerodynamics according to their description.

I have been pounding on my CZ 457 22 since pandemic started--I have shot every 22 ammo made--What we have found is the SV stuff works best no matter what range--The Long Range types have shown no diff--that we can see--at anything past 50 yards Wind, breeze etc is the main thing that makes a great day of long range or just a plinking day--we don't even try with wind--it is just playing if there is any--One of the most interesting ammos we have tried in our bolt actions is the SK semi Auto--it shoots amazing and does really well at longer ranges--interesting that we have also observed that one hole ammo at 50 yards does not mean great at long range--does not make any sense but we have seen it time and time again that certain ammos shoot better at longer ranges even if they don't show out at 25 and 50
Generally the more you spend on 22 ammo the better it shoots and if you find a "magic" lot that amazes you BUY all you can get because the next case may not be that good

If they wanted to show the bullet design I think this would have been a better depiction. Albeit, this is not a "heeled" bullet.

I never will understand why people want to take a cartridge designed quite well for short distances and lob it at ridiculous distances. Sure you might hit a large enough target at 200+ distances, but what is the point? You will never hit any target at such distances consistently or with any decent accuracy.

I think it will shoot however it shoots. Each 22 likes what it likes. Some like cheap stuff, some like fancy stuff. The more expensive ammo is generally more consistent (shot to shot ES), but if your barrel doesn't like it, your likely going be disappointed. SK Pistol Match does better than Tenex in mine and is 1/3 the cost (out to 400y). I'm not buying the marketing hype.

Because it's fun. We have matches that range from 50y to 400y+ and it's a hoot.

I shot a pdog at 285 yards with my Anshutz prone with a sling back when I was young and in much better shape.

Back then (1990s) we didn't have long range 22 stuff. I took a credit card and cut it up and put it under the back scope ring. I was using Eley hunting hollow points I bought from Carl at Champion Shooters Supply. Those were some good days.

And you are right, it is a hoot.

It's relatively cheap and mimics shooting at longer range ;)

Good thing Werner von Braun did not adhere to short distances!

Another party slamming other shooters for having fun. Just what the anti-gun/hunt folks want. Divide and conquer and some follow them right down the path to slamming others for hunting/shooting for game or fun. You see more and more of this, as the anti's gain ground and members.

I have found the same thing 100%. I've actually been doing tuner testing at 50, 100 and 200 since those are my benchrest distances and I change the tuner for each distance to optimize my groups now. I used to tune to 50 and maybe 100 and call it good but at 200 sometimes it would fall apart for no good reason. Now I have a little more confidence that I'm good at each distance.

Dadgum…why do folks find something to argue about in an enjoyable (read that fun) endeavor? I figured out a long time ago that when I stopped enjoying a recreational activity, it was time to find a different direction to trot. I have mentioned on here before that my club shoots a two stage .22 rifle match - first stage at 100 yards and second stage at 200. It is strictly a fun match. Club members cobbled together rules, scoresheets, and targets. A variation of KYL targets at 100; golf balls at 200. It can be entertaining. But it’s fun.
