Franks post is indeed well thought out and informative....

I think i`ll stick with my 22BRX and try to get the speeds i`m after(3300 75Amax) but if it dosent play out as planned i might "Go for broke" and run a 22-250AI reamer in it......


3400+++ sure sounds like LOTS of fun to me...... :

I agree Phil. Frank's fire breathers do sound like a lot of fun and the Rocket sounds best to me especially since I have 500 rds of new Win 220 brass. I had a 224 Clark for a long time, shot great but no factory bullets back then, all custom. Same as a 22-6mm today.

Still thinking and new toys are always fun.

Heres a pic of the rounds we have in our stable of 22 cals currently:

Left to right: .223, .223AI, 22XC, 22-250, 22-250AI, .220 Swift, .220 Weatherby Rocket.

I did forget to mention the .223 class of cartridges and they will get it done at LR also, but in my mind they don't have the boiler room to get them up to speed and I have noticed while loading for my .223AI that the powder charges have to be all the same exact amount down to the exact kernal. Forum member Laurie has talked about this with the .223 family cases.

Agree with phil, I especially like the longer neck that it has in comparison to the '250AI and most of the other 22's. WD

Now, your really testing my memory. My 224 Clark was made up on a Win..70 action with a barrel that Clark was making at the time, Powders were 4350 & H4831. About all we could get at the time. Some of the Norma powders were avaliable but could not always get them. And they varied between lots just like some of the powders today. We all used Winchester 257 Roberts brass, it was better then the Remington 6MM brass. Bullets were 75 and 80 gr. direct from Clark. No other choice. Somebody made a 70 gr Semi Pointed that had a BC like a brick. Didn't work very well anyway.

Hi Phil, the 22XC is my shooting partners rig, he has everything documented and i am sure he will chime in. We do all our reloading here at my bench and he had his 22XC built summer of 2010 and it's a tite neck chamber requiring neck turning.

My .22x6XC, 15.7lb total weight rifle, heavy Krieger 29.250", 1:8 twist barrel, Norman brass, fired case is 49.74 grains of H2O. PT&G reamer, neck chamber .2536”, and zero free bore. The brass is neck turned and annealed every 3rd firing.

I started off using Reloader 17, but experienced heavy buildup of carbon fouling near ~250 rounds, probably from not leaning on it and switched to H4350, but Reloader 17 is my backup powder, as for testing with Accuate 4350 also.

Using A-Max 75 grain bullets, there were two accurate nodes field tested with H4350, 39.25 grains at 3254fps and 41.90 grains at 3557fps.

I have both a bench rest and varmint stock fitted, for bench rest shooting, barrel heat becomes a problem with 18 rounds or more of continued range shooting and it's capable of drilling holes as any other rifle benched beside it. .22 caliber holes are not exactly easy to see parked in the black at 400 or 500 yards either.

My overall opinion, based on the 6XC case, it’s totally under rated, pressure wise. Like I mentioned before about warping the case heads, I never had any type of primer problems or found the case rupture point. I will admit, it has a good lookin length of throat erosion after 800+ rounds, but I played hard with it, as quoted “A Modern Day Swift” also. My shooting partner was watching and made several comments from his side of the bench.

If I was to make a major change, I would have a 26” or 27” barrel.

Sorry, I don't have any other information or comparison for the .22x47L. But looking at the 6.5x47L performance, necking that down would be interesting.

IIRC, our local smith did say that the 22X47L is between the standard 22-250 and the AI version, which is pretty close to the 22XC also. The 22XC will crank them out there and it indeed is "a modern day Swift" Very impressive round for accuracy and speed. But its in that barrel burner category. The 22X47 L that I played with last summer (was on a switch barrel rifle that I bought and it was fried) had some very impressive speed numbers shooting both 80's and 90's. I had to take it out to play. ;D

Also talked to forum member "Drags" at a shoot today and he's ready to start load development on his 22X47L. Give him a PM as he's usually on here most every day. But he built his with parts and pieces he had laying around for a dedicated LR chuck gun.

As Frank mentioned barrel burner category, go to "Overbore" Cartridges Define by Formula, the .22x6XC case volume to bore area ratio is 1262.1.

My selection list is getting shorter. Now down to the 22BR, 22 Dasher/BRX and the 22x47L. Does anyone have info on the 22x47L. Reamer specs, loading data or results in the field with 75/80 gr bullets.

I am shooting and loading for the 22 PPC and it is a very good caliber. I have a 26 Inch 1-8 twist barrel and shooting Hornady 75's, Berger 80's and Sierra 77 and 80's. Powder it likes is a good variety of H322, 4895, Varget and RE-15. I am shooting prone, slow fire, NRA highpower to 600 yes with it and trying to find the one load I can do the best with. Brass is an easy fix and I can buy it as 22 PPC USA, or form from 6PPC or boxer primed 7.62 x 39. It's worth looking into

i once did a 22BR.. came down to H4350 being the best powder in my rifle with the 90 gr VLDs.. but if i were to do it again.. i think that either a 22BR-DX or a 22 Hagar might be more the realm.. esp the latter..

The 224 TTH is the same as the 22-6mm and not the 22-6mm AI. I have a 224TTH and a reamer for the 22-6mmAI but have not chambered with it yet. Forget the 75 gr. bullets, the 80 gr. SMK bullets will do a great job with an 8 twist. The 22-243 Middle Stead, the 224 TTH, the 224 TTH imp, or the 22-284 are all smokers. To bad your not close to here, in Ohio, or I would load you my 22-6mm AI reamer.
