Long quiet night....but

We had 4 around us in one spot yapping all over in the 3-4' tall grasses in NE and although my bud got off 2 shots, nothing was to be found, even though I told him I heard it thwap solid.
This went on for 45 min....with nothing to show for it except jungle fever in that tall CRP stuff....yea and a lot of skeeter nips even as we were drenched in the anti skeeter spray.
4:45am we stopped in a spot we drove by 3 times last night, getting the early light & enough time for a last set so we trudge through 300 yards of hay ready to be cut, set up at the edge next to an open rotating crop field. You can see the snowline trees way in the back on the hill where it came out of. About 6 min into calling one came flying out of no place and its trotting to the caller. I see it and drop my thermal, toss up the MMR AR15, tracking it broadside since its not stopping, then it spins right behind the shockwave for a skinny frontal shot and stops about 40 yards behind it & above it on the slope. I see its thinking what the heck it that...Oh crap....BAM drops on the spot w/a 55g vmax into its chest, no exit. 117 steps to it.
I finish the AM off with 1 the ground at least, yup camera is in the truck and you can see my hay trail I pulled it through to the road.
Big ol male, sharp teeth and 32lbs, it ate well Saturday night on the ranch, nice & fat, & another 2 pointer tail.

What are you using for a thermal imager and also what scope is that on the MMR?
Flir PS32 for thermal scanning, recognition, movement of animals etc.
D740, Gen 3 NV scope. Longest shot so far has been 423 yards.
Both are more than perfect for night calling.
For dark moonless nights I have an IR illuminator for times needed.

So you traveled to Nebraska. Hunted at night and fought mosquitoes.

Hard core. You are hard core.

Luckily for me my NE ranches are within 40-100 miles of Cheyenne, same as my CO ranches.
Its the skeeters that really make it rough. I try to keep my scent clear/clean, but man you do have to pretty much bath in deet to keep them at bay which has its own scent.
We need the moisture but NOT the skeeters!

Perhaps you could train some bats and or Purple Martins to keep their numbers down! I love to watch the Purple Martins doing flybys when I'm cutting the grass! Suppertime for them! ;D
