Long Or Short Action?

Long or Short action . that is the question? I want to build just one more rifle...just one more..
I'm not sure what cartridge I will chamber. ah 6XC, 6SLR, 6-284 , 284 who knows.
I want to order a custom action. this rifle will be for my enjoyment only, hunting, informal target shooting, maybe a groundhog match or two. I really like the short action's but looking at a long action being only .860 longer and @ 3oz's heaver. why not just go with a long action and that keeps the door open to be able to chamber just about anything I would want to over the years. looking real hard at a Bat HRPIC.
What do you think? why use a short action.

I told myself that several rifles ago. LOL. I would think long would be better. If you can't make up your mind on a caliber, have a couple of barrels set up for the same gun.

That's funny.

I said one this year, by end of April I had two, the original was ushered through in a week in July, finally just got the 3rd scoped.

Don't fight it ;)

If you do something in a .284 and want to shoot bergers and use it as a repeater I think you will have to go long in order for the bullets to fit in the bottom.

The short action should be a little stiffer so might group a little tighter but I think you would be hard pressed to tell it. The barrel and the shooter are the bigger factors in tight groups. The short action is a bit faster to cycle in rapid fire but, again, I think you would not notice the difference once you got used to it. The long action is the most flexible to build on unless you want to build a .223 or something like it.

I would go with the long action.

yea . Thanks.. well I guess im stuck with the 6mm bores. I have a rem 700 short set up in a 6XC . I shot a 3" group with it this morning at 700 yrds. so I feel it will be a 6XC or a one of the longer 6SLR or the 243AI 30deg flavors. BUT what if I wanted to do a 284 or 6.5-284 or 6mm/06 or what ever my mind could change to a few years down the road. Why not just use a long action?. I guess I need reassurance that it's ok to run a short action cartridge in a long action. because it is going to be my last one. I have quite a few now. so I would like to set it up for the what if's. I really do not think it would be that much difference as most of you have stated.

I'm not going to look up a Bat HRPIC, if you're single feed, I can't see what difference it would make, but mag fed, a short action cartridge could get unruly in a la mag?

If you get a short action and find that your chambering needs the bullet seated past mag length to run as a repeater, you can always do the Wyatts box modification.
