Loctite on barrel

I just pulled a barrel off for a cut down and recrown. It was on a Remington 700 that had been rebarreled from a outfit in Utah. Instead of grease of some kind they used a big old glob of Red Loctite. Lug and all was stuck together nice. That's the first time ive had to use heat and the big action wrench to get a custom barrel off. Had to rant a little. How many of you guys seen this?

Can't blame you for the rant. I would think that a properly torqued barrel would not require any Loctite. The blue could be used but most threaded actions should not require it.

Proper threads preclude the need for thread lockers.

I've seen it and it ain't fun! Also for a while Remington used thread locker of some sort on 700's that needed some heat.

The last one I pulled was obviously a poor threading job. Thread locker shouldn't be used as a bedding job for threads which I think may happen more than we would like to think.

Those threads look square like a whitworth thread or acme thread. What were the threads in action?

I spent a lot of money to rebarrel my M1a twice by reputable builders. The second builder actually used red loctite on threads of barrel as well as over torqued it. I won't mention names but some people shouldn't being practicing gun smithing.

The last 700 I had rebarreled had to have the factory barrel cut off in front of the receiver ring and milled out. It was a 1965 production gun.
Must have had some kind of thread locker on it.

I have a barrel shank book, according to it
1917 Enfield should be
10 Sq. TPI thread, .800" tenon length, 1.125" major, 1.085" minor, 45° bolt nose and a .410" wide extractor cut
