Lock-ease

Been reading the info. on Lock-ease and how it helps with fresh cleaned barrel flyers. Anyone currently use it and wondered if its effective or not.
Thanks for any replies.

On my current barrel, the CCB shots aren't fliers, I don't bother with it.

I do use it on my bolt body though, it makes for a slick feel.

I tried it and was thoroughly unimpressed. I tried Sentry Smooth Kote and found it to work very well. Lock-Ease is graphite - Smooth Kote is molybdenum. Make sure you don't use too much and make sure the bore is completely dry. If it isn't and you store your rifle vertically, some will run into the chamber area.

I discovered, at least with my rifles, that first shot flyers were due to over cleaning the barrel relative to so called "copper fouling".

Once I switched to a more moderate cleaning process that focused on carbon removal, the flyers and the need to "season" the barrel so the first few shots would hit the desire point of impact disappeared.

I know this is a highly controversial statement and I'm not making any absolute pronouncements, only what I learned and experienced.

I described, in other posts, how I reached this conclusion so I won't repeat it here. Also, I didn't come up with this idea on my own. A fellow shooter suggested it then I did a lot of research and found some intriguing articles on the concept of "copper equalibrium" and "minimum distrubance" cleaning. At first I was highly skeptical but I tried it and at least for me, it worked.

Here are some references on the net: gunblue 490, tiborauaurus Rex, 8541 tactical (John McKay), panhandle precision. Read them then judge for yourself if your interested.

PS: The graphite pre conditioning never worked for me.

My opinion is that Lock Eze (LE) works for me. My theory is that LE fills pits in the barrel and maybe makes it a little easier to clean the barrel...

The gun settles out on the 10/X ring quicker. Experiment, won't hurt anything. Good Luck!

I feel like it works for me. Even after a heavy cleaning, you really only need 1-2 sighters before the gun is settled in.

With a clean barrel and no lock ease, I usually don't feel like it's settled in until 5-7 rounds.

I haven't tried other products, and I still shoot just as many sighters before going into record fire, but I do notice a difference.

I use after every cleaning. Before using it, I used lighter fluid. Both methods work well to quell first shoot flyers but lock-ease seems to make the barrel a breeze to clean.

I am not using it anymore. Did a long term test using it on an AR (after cleaning) that I use for shooting coyotes of opportunity at 250 yards. The AR would sit for maybe a week or two at a time before it was used to shoot when a coyote showed up.

I have found that I am better off knowing where the first shot will go, rather than trying to make it go where the following shots will go. However, I am depending on the first shot as the most important, your needs may be different.

Can someone repost the video of Speedy doing the barrel cleaning that had the lock-ease segment to it. It was on a previous cleaning thread and I can’t find it yet in the search. Thanks!

I bought Lock-Ease, or at least that's what the container said, from Lowe's. I don't know what was in there but it was dry, big fat flakes. Almost looked like Bullseye powder but the flakes were bigger. Maybe they got some kind of counterfeit stuff out of Chy-na. Might have been graphite but it sure wasn't powdered. Or fluid. At all.

Checked with NAPA Canada. They don't carry it. We don't have Lowes in the Maritimes. Jig-A-Loos Extreme Graphite spray is available but I read on another site that the carrier in it doesn't have any oil so if you spray it on a patch it evaporates almost instantly.
