Loads for coyote hunting with a .243

I would like to know what you use for coyote's ; bullet make, Gr. , powder , # of gr and is this load fur friendly (eg does not make a large hole on exit).

thanks

Im a 243win man. I shoot mostly 87Vmax bullets in front of a medium charge of H4350. I also use 223 and 22-250 to switch things up. Not sure what you are calling fur friendly but most varmint guns are pushing light frangible bullets at over 3000fps and they put holes in what they hit. :-\

The 90 Grain Nosler BT (big game bullet) with IMR 4350, Federal 210 Match primers. This bullet is extremely accurate in my 243's shooting in the sub 1/2 moa range in a sporter weight barrel.

I'm not an expert coyote hunter but the few I've shot with this bullet go down quick and there is very little fur damage.

55g Nosler CT or 58g vmax, 49g W760, 3886 fps, DRT load. Hit a soft spot & yes it will make the fur no good.
I know not of a .243 load that wont make dust of fur in most cases.

one of the best bullets I've found for performance and not leaving a huge exit hole is the old tried and trued 75gr. Sierra flat base Hollow Point Varminter in my 243 behind Varget

I own a couple 243 win and my Heavy Hart barrel gun I like 115g vld Berger with 46.5g of rl-25, 1-8 twist or faster needed barrel...I also have a couple sporter type guns that love the 95g nosler balistic tips running 41.5g of imr 4350...As far as coyotes it will kill them..

243 Win for coyotes? That can be overkill.Hope you plan to shoot light bullets or past 500 yards. My 223 Rem with 55 gr SPT Sierra have never failed me. Taken down Mr Wyld E Coyote many times out to 525 yards. Now don't get me wrong because I love 243 Win, but many factory rifles have too tight twist to hurl those lighter bullets as needed.

For the 243--80gr Rem Corelokts with 36 gr Reloder 15 and reg primer.

Good for deer or coyotes and only made one hole in coyote.

Reduce load for your gun and work back up.

Verify with alliant.com..

Good site for all their powders with hundreds of loads for dozens of calibers.

I think the idea with a (larger) caliber like the 243 for coyotes, if you want to keep the fur, is to use a target type bullet that will not expand but will make a small entrance and small exit. Good shot placement will prevent having to track them.

I have a load I worked up with 55gr nosler varmagedon hp( mostly because they are cheap) using IMR 8208xbr( i had some not being used and excellent temperature sensitivity) for my light carry gun. Produces 3750 fps and .6" accuracy. I can not remember the exact load but in four different brands of cases shot into 1.25" group@ 200yds with two shots of each brand of cases. Not bad for a 7.5lb.s 21.5" barreled gun chucked to gether with a take off barrel.
Those bullets are cheap and make large soft cantelopes(used to test expansion) into a fine mist.........

A soft lead tipped bullet has always done well for me. Not the best BCs in the world, but most of your yote shots are under 100.

This bullet is good and doesn't do much damage

I have had pretty good luck with my Dasher with the 87 V-max at about 2950. On frontal hits or shoulder shots there is rarely an exit. Behind the shoulder is usually about a 1" exit. Easily repaired if you should desire to do so. Should be easy enough to duplicate in your .243. Good luck and hapy hunting. ;D Couldn't resist a pic of the new rifle. ;D

My favorites are the Nosler Ballistic Tips and the Speer TNT in 70 grain. I lean to the NBT on 45.7 grains of IMR 4350 with Fed210M primers and a 2.710 oal.

I also use the 80 grain ballistic tip on 37.3 grains of IMR 3031, Fed 215 primers and an oal of 2.815" or a slight jam. Don't know that I would use it if I wanted a pelt.

Sierra Blitzkings perform similarly accuracy wise but the tapered jacket on the Noslers is a better design IMHO.

I've taken several yotes with my 243 & my 6xc using 75gr Vmaxs. At ranges from 90-250yds I've yet to even have an exit wound. Out of the 243 I've used both N550 and R-17 for powder, Norma cases, and Rem 91/2 primers.

In the past I've used 70gr NBT's from the 243 on a fair number of coyotes and had various results in relation to exit wounds. Some times none, and other times "substantial". :o

I don't routinely keep the hides, but subscribe to the mentality that ya have to find em if you want to keep em. And the above mentioned bullets will make them easy to find.... right where ya hit em. ;) WD

Near max loads of Varget with Nosler 55 gr and 70 gr BT bullets. Great accuracy from my Tikka T-3.
