loads for .284 Winchester with new sierra 180?

No, I know, no worries at all..., there are a lot .284’s entering I agree with you on that, but as time progresses they seem, on average, (some stellar guys notwithstanding) to be having a harder and harder time finishing high and snagging the wins.

Thanks everyone for the replies and comments...I think. ;)
I talked to a Sierra rep this morning and he shoots a Shehane and does ok. He told me to just start with a bit less powder with the Sierra's than the Bergers due to the difference in the bearing surface of the Bergers vs the Sierra's. He implied that there may be some pressure signs so start low.

Yes. Bearing surface is more on them but they shoot. Do normal load work up and you will be close to where your at now

David, FWIW in TX State I shot a 284 Win with 184 Berger’s at 2780fps. Any lost points were defiantly my fault. Perhaps my 7/270 WSM would have saved a few?

I’m assuming you mean your most recent Texas Long Range Championship, this last month, that rainy one you went ahead and stayed for :)).

To be fair, you’ve also won the State long range championship at least once with a magnum.

I’m looking at the photos of the names on the trophy, and I have a theory that your van arrives with both rifles ready to go each year, but if Erik isn’t shooting the individual matches for whatever reason, well, why mess with the extra magnum noise? You guys do have a good duopoly going.

** yes, I do know what Erik shoots :).

I'm running 54.5 grains of H4831sc and it gets me 2875. That's my go too powder for optimum accuracy. Started using RL17 with the 180s and accuracy was good but not superior. Being a hunter not comp shooter, it was more than enough and it got me around 2975. Someone said it's tough on throats but at around 900 rounds, my throat looks as good as my 6.5-284s running 4831. So far so good. My barrel is 29"
my response you responded to was 10 years ago LOL.

I'm not real good reading dates on threads. It popped up and I answered. I will admit I wondered about those 180 Sierra's. I just figured like everything else, they are extinct but you wound up finding a bunch and felt good about trying them out. Sorry for my ignorance on the thread date.

I hope the occasional sales don’t imply discontinuance. There’s probably a quiet following, maybe a numerically small one, that have seen firsthand personal midrange bests and believe these got overshadowed by the rollout of the 183’s, and for a while they may have been hard to obtain. I shot a clean with 13-X’s in a 15 shot 600 yard match with these once, but I didn’t make that particular gun, of course, that has basically nothing in common with all my other rifles, a depressing thought, but I sure do like its trigger.
