loads for 284 winchester and 180 Scenars

Hi all,

I have a long range club day approaching and its time to take the 6mmBR barrel off my new-to-me F-Class rifle ( Barnard / 29" Kreiger) and switch barrels to the yet un-fired ( by me) 284 Winchester barrel (30"). Previous owner used Amax's so I need to find another bullet.
I have a supply of the Scenar 180's, Lapua brass, Fed match primers, various powders.

Any one out these have first hand experience with this combo for a starting load and probable velocity I should be looking at.

Thanks Creedfan, 4831 I have.
Many years ago when I got into IHMSA pistol shooting to the determent of hunting I sold 4 x 5lb containers of surplus 4831 to a very lucky guy.
Now gone full turn and wish I still had that on hand even if it would be 20 years on.

I have found with the exact ingredients you are using that ADI2209 (4350) jamming works very well for me at 2850 fps with a 30" Brux The same speed works using 2213sc also. This out of a 32" Krieger. I have tried jamming and jumping, having more success with a jam. I use these loads shooting f class in Australia.

Hello Peter! One thing you need to be aware of before you begin is that the 180 Scenars have an extremely long bearing surface. If you don't have at least a .285 freebore and a .300 is better, your bearing surface will be BELOW the neck / shoulder junction. Since they DO have a long bearing surface, I would opt for H4831sc or IMR 7828ssc. With H4831sc, start at about 52.6 and s-l-o-w-l-y work up to about 54.5... With IMR 7828ssc start at 53.0 and work towards 55.0... Somewhere in there with either powder is where you will find the load.

I just ordered an 8lb jug of H4831sc and then a friend of mine tells me he knows a guy who wants to sell a jug at a better price, no hazmat, no shipping...

I could have saved $40.

It is always hard to sink that money in a jug but when you have to repurchase what you once had or a deal comes along after you pay full price, it hurts.

And there is no difference between H4831 and H4831sc, according to Hodgdon. SC just trickles better but they both have the same burn rate and load data. I've loaded both and found no significant difference in velocity shooting the same load in the same rifle.
