Loading the 75 gr v-max ....

I stumbled across this loading for my 6MMBR it uses the 75 gr V-MaX bullet & a good dose of Varget powder...I used reg. cci Sm Rifle primers instead of CCI MaG Sm rifle primers...That same load of powder with the Mag Primers was only a so so shooting load...Is it possible using the reg primer group size can be cut in half or more??...I used this load twice & it still shoots that well...The only thing I can figure is the Reg. primer is not starting the bullet forward just a bit at the start of ignition...just enough to lower the pressure in the case...it is my understanding that boat tail bullets need that real solid thump of a full power load to upset the base of the bullet properly...I'm hoping that load does well past two hundred yds..I have about 3 boxes of the 75 gr v-max & I'd like to do some groundhog shooting with them...mike in ct

Mike,

When Jackie Schmidt did our railgun test, we compared CCI 450s and the BR4s, and with about 31gr Varget and 105s the velocity was virtually the same.

From that I suspect there really isn't much difference between the two primers in terms of ignition energy.

That said, if you've seen the difference on paper with the 75s I'd say that makes you the expert. Stick with what works obviously!

I could never get the 75s to shoot particularly well in my gun, though it drills one-holers with Berger 80s. Maybe I should try the regular primers. Also, are you jamming or jumping?

Expert??? I have not yet used a pound of powder in that gun...I set up my dies with the 87 gr V-Max bullet..Took a sized & deprimed case just barely seated the bullet into the case mouth...Took the partially seated dummy round & put it into the chamber of the rifle & closed the bolt...Then Carefully extracted it from the rifle..I noted the lenght [somewhere] & used that lenght case/bullet to set up the seating die..I adjusted the seating stem to go a bit less than a quarter turn deeper...I'd need to go & do that all over again to get a demensional lenght for you..I'm guessing here it is just 10 thousanths off the face of the lands..no contact..Since then I have not moved the stem on the seating die..& I've used that setting for all the bullets I have tried...I had those 6MMBR cases set aside..They had been sized cleaned & then primed with Regualar Small Rifle CCI primers..I had intended to try another load using Benchmark & the 75 Gr V-Max...Thats why I said I stumbled on this loading...I took for gospel the loads I read about here...I might be wrong but on the Varmint load page Every load using VARGET seems to use a Magnum Small Rifle primer...more later, mike in ct

Mike,

Happy to see someone else having success with the 75 Vmax. I have just started load development with my br and I get great results with this bullet. My most accurate load is 33.0 grains varget, BR4 primer .010 jam. My gun has a 12 twist -26" tube and it sure likes these bullets. It shoots the 68 Berger with the same results, but I have to shoot it ALOT hotter to get the same accuracy. Where I live the Bergers are hard to get so the Vmax is the logical choice, and they look to be better at 500-600 yards. With the above load I get 3300 fps.

Andy & Mike: You guys have peaked my curiosity in hotter loads. I have regularly shot the 75gr V-max with 32grs of Varget with good results, usually jammed .015 into the lands. You guys are using quite a bit more, sounds like the 75 likes to move a lot faster so I'll give it a try the next tie I shoot them.

I agree with Moderator, the 80gr Bergers are super accurate and I love to shoot them.
shcal.

With My one in ten twist Hart barrel w/.270 neck the the Berger 80 mef & the 88 gr match flat base do just as well..The first loads to really come together were the 87 gr V-Max/Varget W mag primers...I'm new to loading this cartridge so any tips or ideas you guys offer I'm looking really closely at...one draw back to the 75 v-max out at 200 yds the load has not been as good as the 80 gr berger or the 87gr V-max...A little extra distance & any wind shows up in my groups...So I'm still testing it out..The 100 yd results do offer some promise, & I don't mind testing loads with this gun....Almost anything shoots decently in this gun...finding the exceptional load that will take some time..mike in ct

The other factor that may be at play in my situation is I'm shooting the 75s from a 1:8" twist. Unlike other bullets, I do get some coppering in the last 6" of the barrel. My PacNor is TIGHT. Could be that the combo of fast twist and tight bore does not agree with the 75s.

But I will add your load to the Varmint page, and note that CCI std primers are preferred. Thanks guys!

So far I have only tested the 75 Vmax at 100 yards. I am going back out this week and I will shoot them to 550 yards and I will let you know how they do. Another bullet that shows promise in my br is the 70 SMK. The only thing with this bullet is the way that my gun is throated I don't have much neck holding the bullet. As a Varmint/coyote rig I am afraid of jamming bullets into the magazine and having runout issues? With the 75 Vmax I have 1/2 of the neck grabbing. As a side note my gun has a .269 neck and I neck size with a .266 bushing.

I have a 8 twist hart 6br that loves the 75 Gr Hornadys. I've tried Varget, IMR 4895, and Benchmark and it does well with them all once you find the charge. Only more accurate bullet in my gun is 80 Gr. Fowlers. I've shot several groups in the 2s with these. Cannot get 107 Sierras or 105 Lapuas to group worth a darn no matter what I try. Thoughts?

Re the 105s, they are skinnier,by about .0005") in diameter. They may not work well in the Hart. Try the Berger VLDs, .015-.020" in the lands, with a stout charge of Reloader 15.

What's your load with the 75 V-max? I'd like to get them to group better in my 8-twist PacNor. I've tried Varget and IMR 4895.

After reviewing my notes, my best loads with 75 Horn in 6br were 31.0 IMR 4895 and 33.0 Varget both with CCI 450. I'm still going up on the Benchmark and it seems like it wants to shoot but I still have vertical. This bullet is pretty amazing when you consider it costs half the customs.

Hmmm,
I've been using CCI small rifle mag. primers with 34.5 grn. Varget and getting consistent 5 shot 3/8" groups at 200 meters with the 65 grn. V-Max and the 65 grn. Berger MEF's. I've pretty much followed the advice I've gotten on this site. I've also been using 33.8 grn. of Varget with the magnum primers shooting 68 grn. Starkes, Fowlers, and Hammonds. The 68's and 70 grn. Nosler B.T.'s do well but dont't perform like the 65's. My barrel is a 1:14 twist. I might try switching to a regular primer for the 68's & 70 and see what happens.
