Load Needed

Hi Gang,

I'm looking for a load to use beyond what I've selected to use for bbl breakin on my 6BR. For that task I'm using 31.0g Varget and Nosler BT's.

The rifle is a Browning A-Bolt with a 28" Douglas #8 1:10. I'll be using Lapua brass, new/unfired. and Lapua 90g Scenars. 89.5, actually.

My ballistic software, Load From a Disk, isn't exactly jumping with 6br loads, which is pretty disappointing and this a new cartridge for me so I don't really know where to start. I still have all the powders I used for the rifle when it was a .243...IMR 3031, IMR 4895, H380, Varget, VV N133, etc. Oddly, according to the software, N140 is the recommended VV powder. 1) I don't have and and 2) that seems a bit slow. Anyhow ideas would be appreciated as well as what velocities I could expect. Thanks! -Rod-

A friend of mine has a 1:10 and has had no luck with the 90 scenars. He now has 88LD's which shoot bughole, I think it is the length of the scenar that does not go well with the 1:10, but experiences vary.

The 90gr Scenar is an excellent bullet, but Scenars tend to run about .0006 narrower in shank diameter than American bullets. They work great in some barrels, but sometimes a fatter bullet groups tighter. If your Douglas is slightly slower than 1:10, you may need to run a shorter bullet as the 90gr Scenar may not stabilize unless you push it real fast.

Varget is a good Choice. If you want to go slightly slower, try Reloader 15. If you want to go slightly faster, try H4895. I think H4895 would be my first choice in a 1:10 shooting 88s-90s.

Case fill should be just about 100% with H4895 if you have one bullet diameter,of bullet shank) in the neck. Start at 29.0 grains and work up. I would start either the 90gr Scenar or 88 Berger .010-.015" into the lands.

I bet you can find a real accurate load arounnd 2920-2950 and another at around 3030.

No 88 Bergers I'm afraid and with so many hundreds, probably thousands of slugs I have here, I can't really justify buying more. Can't afford it either!!!!

I think I have some Starke 70's. I know I have some Berger VLD's but those are 95's if I recall. I have tons of Berger 70's as well. I probably still have some Reloder 15. I never really found good loads with it in my .243. Let me take a look at what I have here for slugs and I'll post again. In the meantime, those Berger 70's...I'd forgotten all about them. Any ideas? -Rod-

Edit: I have some Hornady's labeled as 87.1g. They are HPBT. I'd have to go through my load records to see what I used them for in the past. I have A-Max 105's. Lots of Berger 60's/70's, Nosler 55's and 80's. -Rod-
