Living proof we have Coyotes in North Carolina

This dumb fool may not be able to call them. But they are vulnerable to the steel trap.
Coyote01.jpg

We are now hearing and seeing coyote sign on every track of land we are trying to manage. They may eat a lot of smaller predators but they are causing havoc to our deer and turkey population.

They're everwhere! They're everywhere! I was in at Brookgreen Gardens, Myrtle Beach, NC a couple of years ago in July and one ran across our path at 11am in the morning.

Dreever, You obviously are not a game manager if you don't like trappers. I guess you would rather have the predators wreak havoc on your game populations. I'll bet you don't have any problem shooting the deer and small game that trappers have made possible by taking out the over-abundant predators, though. You are obviously one of the hypocrits that want it both ways. If you think that traps are cruel, you have not been well schooled. Usually, an unwanted animal can be released with very little injury. Send me your e-mail and I will send you a gamecam sequence of two coyotes killing a big buck. They literally eat him alive. That is the way that coyotes and wolves do it. They are merciless killers and many don't seem to see them for what they are. I suppose you are member of PETA, too-right?

Great coyote/trap pic. I may be laying a little steel myself after the first of the year. Too many bobcats for the health of my ducks.

Nat,
It looks like that sucker is still alive in the pic. For goodness sakes, next time before you get that close for a pic, kill the damn thing!!! I have heard they can go nuts on you in a trap like that. it looks like you are right over it. and please don't stop trapping them. catch them all!!! if you want to call them in, the next time you catch one like that get him yipping and it will bring coyotes in that are around.

Don't have much "living" proof; but they have been here for years. Just getting more populated now. Most of these were killed calling. The wind & the "thick" makes calling difficult at times but more respond than you think. But once they smell you the gigs over... Here is a sample of a few kills for more "proof"-

While I'm sure they are very hard on smaller predators, I doubt many healthy deer are taken by coyotes (in NC were we get little snow). I do believe they do get a fair amount of fawns though. Here is a proof you don't want to leave a deer in the woods around a population. I shot this one with buckshot & found it the next morning, just as the pic shows .

Traps are a necessary evil and a great tool for game management. Maine has a thriving population of Coyotes since the late 80's. Since they moved in the deer heard has been on a steady decline. Any place where coyotes commonly get over 40 lbs and the snow gets deep needs to pay attention to what is actually going on with the game population. Maine coyotes are almost never seen by some one using a call. Baiting and night hunting in the cold months works but you have to be a special person to sit out all night and wait for a Yote to come in when it is -15 to -20 below zero.

The alternative to traps would be let the coyotes thrive and kill all the deer then starve back until the deer population regains it's numbers. Any one who thinks that coyotes only kill what they need to survive has obviously never been to a deer yard in February when the snow is 4 feet deep. I am not a trapper but it is much easier to look at a coyote in a leg hold trap than it is for me to see a half eaten deer taken down a day or two before, laying in the snow waiting for the dogs to come back and eat enough so that they can die.

I am a cattle rancher and have seen first hand what a coyote and even more devastating what several coyotes can do, I have had cows giving birth and have had coyotes eat the calf as it was coming out and not stop there eat right into the cow but not kill her just leave her with no hind end then come back later and finish eating her untill the shock or loss of blood finally kills her, I have seen this many times on full size deer as well, Wolves and bears are just as bad, I shoot everyone I see on this ranch, we have wolves here now but I have not personally seen them, I am missing 4 calves and one cow right now and suspect wolves as the culprits I plan on going out this morning and look some more for my livestock but with several thousand acres to look over in the roughest country there is I have little hope as I have been looking for a month, so I personally don't care how these vermin die, trap, poison, gut shot, or whatever!
However Dreever made a comment that he is entitled to, it was a simple one that did not go into detail for all we know he lost a favorite hunting dog in a trap and not involved with pita at all and even if he is president of pita he has his rights the same as you and I do so a statement like this is really uncalled for IMHO. I am with you in regards I also may be laying a little steel if I can't find my livestock as I know I will get no help from fish and game! I will just keep it to myself ;)

Very disturbing trail cam photos of coyotes taking down a mature whitetail buck. The buck gives 'em a fight, but never had a chance after being blooded. Not pretty, takes a long time.

Coyotes take down a lot of deer. I don't know how many, but it's got to be significant. I was told they only hunt mice, rabbits and the like. After seeing them harass deer, I know better.

No matter what'cha think of any critter it still deserves a clean/quick end, and yes I trapped back in the day. If you want others to Respect your opinions than Respect theirs.

Wayne,

Thank you for supporting my right to an opinion.

sbhooper,

Perhaps you should read the sticky again on "Forum Behavior Issues" http://forum.accurateshooter.com/index.php/topic,2448516.0.html

Roger,
I understand what your saying and even agree with you right now while I am calm and I am not hauling one of my cows to the bone yard but a cattleman's herd becomes almost like family to him not like your kids or your favorite cattle or bird dog but still you raise them from a calf all the way to finally putting them down because there down in the hips or something 12-18 years with each one of these animals and you get to know them so to speak, some of them you don't even like they each have there own personality but when you see the carnage I have seen, when you come upon one of these heart wrenching scenes it's indescribable, if the coyotes are still there and you happen to get a shot or two off and happen to hit one anywhere you don't care your so angry if they go dragging there selves off crying it's almost better at the time, as now your stuck with the task of finishing off your favorite cow/horse/pig, or whatever and cleaning up the mess. On any normal I agree with you I try to kill any animal as quickly and as cleanly as possible, on the day's like described I just don't care,..is that wrong of me,...probably but it doesn't change how I feel at the time.
On a side note I have watched the habits of coyotes my whole life and fully believe there a important part of the ecosystem, I think a coyote here and there is a good thing, they do kill rodents and such and help keep the carrion cleaned up, however when they pack up it is never a good thing, I have witnessed them kill just for the sport of it, there like any dog domestic or wild, they like the chase!
Nat, I am sorry for sidetracking your thread. I am glad to see your keeping them thinned out.

Dreever,
Your welcome my friend ;)
Wayne.

Wayne, I understand also, as I started trapping gophers in my Uncles cow pasture because of cattle breakin a leg now and then. Then went in the barns (haymow/feed bunkers) for coon , which led to the creeks for muskrats an mink etc. I DO know where your comin from . I just changed my way of thinking/taking the critters I was after is all.

If you hunt or trap, there is a chance you could make an animal suffer. Knowing this why do people hunt or trap and why do these same people complain about an animal suffering? I'm curious...

mytwo60,
Man has been hunting as long as he has been on this earth, for thousands of years as a necessity and in some cases still a necessity to simply survive! We mostly hunt now, or should I say I mostly hunt now because I love game meat and you can't buy it at Safeway. Also we or again I hunt for the same reasons a pack of coyotes hunt a deer when not hungry,...FOR THE SPORT OF IT! The difference between we as sportsmen and a coyote is we strive for a humane clean kill as to not make the poor dumb beast suffer anymore then necessary! I believe I can answer your question with just one word,....RESPECT.
Wayne.

When I hunt it's my DUTY to to make the best shot possible or not shoot. I've been SKUNKED more than I care to admit because of a possible bad shot and I've SCREWED UP TOO and it TICKS ME OFF.... BUT....back to dreevers posting.....He has his opinions/reasons (as I have and everyone else) for why he feels the way he does and he shouldn't be berated for those on a ADULT Forum.

BTW as soon as the smokepole Deer season is over ........well the gears is all loaded and ready for the songdogs........... ;D

Any time I take an animal in a trap it is dispatched or released when I find it. That is both the law and the ethical thing to do. Yes, they have their own jaws and can bite very hard. The trick is to keep them at a safe distance. I harvested a Coyote in 1992 with a bow on the same property. Until last year I had not seen another couote on this property. I had several light up at dark while deer hunting last year and again about 3 weeks ago. A friend caught 6 last year in a period of a week. He has already cought 4 more this week. I put my fire storm caller out last Saturday out in a field 100 yards up wind of me on a ridge top overlooking the hollow where the coyotes lit up 3 weeks ago. I did a locator call 30 minutes before dark. then a few minutes later gave out a female howl and some yelps. Then shut down and listen. I was surrounded by cut over and could hear walking around but never saw a coyote. I was 35 feet up in a white oak tree. I will give them lots of credit they are instinctively smart. I see tracks and scat everywhere. They are relatively easily trapped with a hole set, sentinal post set, or even a flat set. Every farmer in the county has called me about trapping on their land for them.
