Limited 6XC data

I am considering switching to the 6XC. There is very limited info on this cartridge. I have the Berger manual but everything is set for the heavier bullets, (I use 87 gr. V-Max for prairie dogs). Limited powder choices. Also I didn't see anything on a trim to length. Searched all over the web can't hardly find anything. Does anyone know of a good info. source?

I'm running 38gr of N150 with the 70gr BlitzKings out of a 20" barreled Blaser R93 (Custom Krieger 1:8 twist) and am making 3300fps. Well below max pressures and it shoots in the .3's. It's also a coyote, fox, and woodchuck killing machine.

What is your reamer?

I am going to order a 60 fb from Manson specifically for the Sierra 60 to 80 grain bullets just for varmints. Trying to get David excited about a varmint 6xc but I think he is a high bc guy. I am a speed explosion guy.

I sent Dave Mason 6XC dummy rounds for the bullets below. He said the freebore would be .055"
Berger 87grn VLD Hunting Bullet - Cartridge OAL = 2.634"
Berger 88grn High BC FB Varmint - Cartridge OAL = 2.666"
Berger 95grn VLD Hunting Bullet - Cartridge OAL = 2.679"

I also sent him a 6XC dummy round with a 87grn V-Max bullet. He said the freebore would be .085"

55 fb would be perfect for me. The 55 would be great for the 60 sierra hp if you ever try it. Or the 70 TNT and 70 Varmegeddon.

The 88 berger fb is very long. I would really think you would need more than 55 fb for that one.

This might be of interest.....

My rifle was done with a standard Pacific Tools reamer, cut to SAMMI Specs, nothing fancy. The barrel maker usually rents the reamers for jobs like mine.

When your 6xc varminter project becomes a reality, depending upon the twist rate you choose, let me recommend you try 4 bullets for varmints, predators, and up to deer. The 70gr NBT, the 75gr Vmax, the 80gr Sierra Blitz, and the 85gr HPBT from Sierra. I went the route of a 10 twist for my walking varminter and just enjoy it immensely. JME, YMMV. WD

The 70 Varmegeddon and the 80 Blitz are both awesome.

I am pretty sure I can get the 6XC with the small rifle primer to throw a 70 grain at 3900 fps and a 80 grain at 3750.

Man that would hit a groundhog like a hand grenade and should have a very good barrel life with the right powder.

Just to bump and old thread and continue voicing into the echo chamber since the freebore was being discussed with regard to lighter bullets. I have the standard ptg reamer with .105 freebore as shown in the above chamber print via damon.

Well I found the distance to my lands and seated the 90 tipped gameking .010 off of for this picture where I intend to begin my load testing. .

The .105" freebore is great with the 105 and 115 gr bullets, it starts to get a bit long for the lighter stuff. I agree that a .055 freebore would be pretty perfect for a rig that isnt going to be used with the uber high bc bulets.

You could pretty much shoot that bullet in a zero fb and be fine from that picture.

Agreed on the 90 tgk, Im guessing they took into major consideration when they designed it: to fit and work in old factory 243 barrels.

But as far as 6xc goes (with other bullets as well) I think the .055 number that was floated above would be just hunky dory with barely any downside. You could still do the 105 gr bullets without robbing too much case capacity should you want to try for a bit longer distance without letting these lighter bullets float right at the end of the case neck like it is with the longer freebores. It would be nice to have the option without it being a special order reamer or anything.
But by the same token the 105 freebore still positions the 103 edx well which is what I tried first but its just not shooting as well as I would like, that was the impetus for me looking into the lighter 90 tgk.
