Lightweight long action gun build

Gentleman (and ladies), I am embarking on building an ultralight rifle in a long action, remington footprint. Instead of reinventing the wheel I need to find out what is the absolute lightest long action (single shot or otherwise), lightest premium trigger and lightest bases/rings. $$ are no object. Caliber & barrel TBD when I acquire that info. I need something I can carry for miles in a jungle environment. TIA for any info or suggestions, Hog.

Is there an action lighter than Pierce's titanium action( 20.8 oz.)? Lighter bolt option can further reduce weight by 1.5 oz.

Maybe a carbon fiber wrapped barrel. http://forum.accurateshooter.com/index.php?topic=3837126.msg36368585#msg36368585

Pierce titanium action, mountain rifle barrel contour, mcmillan edge stock, topped with a 6x40 lepold setting in Talley light weight bases, with a Timney trigger set a 1.5lbs. I'll take one of those also. 8). Better watch your caliber choice or it will kick your teeth out.

Caliber choice is going to be a compromise between power and speed and recoil. Still researching that parameter. I am leaning toward something in the .25 or 26 caliber.

Pierce Titanium action, mcmillan A3 edge stock, ABS barrel. My personal caliber of choice would be a 6mm-06 ackley using h1000 and 107 smk's. 9ish lb rifle shooting a 107 grain bullet at 3200 fps = my idea of a long range flat shooting hunting rifle.

Unless you are an ultra-athelete with zero percent body fat, I would encourage you to not pursue the lightest of the lightweight stuff. As weight of the rifle decreases, so does shootability at times as well as the abilty for a shooter to induce form errors more easily. Look in the mirror before worrying about the removing the last pound or two of rifle weight.

I understand the physics and it may turn out to be a small cal in the 6mm family. At any rate, I don't see it being less than 5 - 6 lbs after the scope weight is taken in to account.

The easiest way to lighten a rifle is to put a big hole down the middle.

28.JPG This is a 28 Nosler I built. Its a Pierce ti, 26" #4 fluted Brux with ti brake. Manners eh-3 topped with w 3-18 vx6. Total weight is 8.2lbs and you dont give up shootability. Puts 195 Bergers under 1" at 300 going 3050 fps.

Could do a gap 6.5 4s in a short action and save weight. It will push a 140 a close to 3100. Long action a 6.5 addiction would make my list for a .26.

I just lightened up my 338-375 Ruger built on a Rem 700 SS Ultra Mag action by outfitting it with an AG Composites all carbon fiber stock. The stock out of the box and prior to bedding with Devcon weighed in at only 24 oz. on my shipping scale and is as rigid as solid steel. Has aluminum pillars installed as well. Stockystocks.com has them on hand for $500 and I think you can get free shipping. Really nice all carbon fiber stock for the money. Would put it up in a rigidity test against any Manners or McMillan stock any day of the week. So strong that AG composites has tested their strength by driving over the stock barrel channel and magazine inletting area with the front tire of a 3/4 Ton Dodge diesel truck while the stock was laying on its side. Survived with no cracks or breaks whatsoever. Videos on their web site. Was is cinema trickery? Maybe. But from what I can tell, I have no reason to doubt the truthfullness of that test. Of course I'll never try it. Lol
