Lightest 6mm Bullet with 1 in 8" twist?

Ledd- My chronograph said 3650 on one of the 75 gr bullets that I got to check. That was a starting load for that bullet.I had no chronograph damage at 10 feet from the muzzle so I think the velocity was for a complete bullet. It made a 5 inch group at 50 yards with 3 jagged pieces on the paper. 28 inch barrel.
I went to a Sierra 70 gr HPBT bullet for my load and it chronographs at 3748 and has stayed together for about 500 rounds so far so I am not worrying about it falling apart.I have another 6 ackley and it is a 12 twist Hart barrel so I will feed the 75 grainers to it somewhere down stream since I have 2000 of them gathering dust now.
If you are set on this bullet I would only buy one box of them and see what happens. They must be a great varmint bullet when they hit something soft and furry.

Not that I'm set on th 75gr Sierra, just that I already have a decent supply of them that I bought for my 6mm Remington. Figured no sense in buying another bullet to put on the shelf if I can use those. I'm just gonna slow em down to about 3300 and see what happens. They are excellent bullets for varmints though. I'd like to take a video of a gopher being shot at 20 yards with my 6mm Rem and share it, but it would be WAY too grotesque and inappropriate for a public social media web site ;)

OP,,,my 6mm BR will push 68 gr bullets ~3550fps and 75 gr ~3450fps,,,,with an 8 twist bbl I have no trubl with any Sierra or Berger bullet ,but, cant speak for other brands,,,,Roger

Ironworker - Needs to call Nosler and ask what maximum RPM that bullet can handle without becoming Poof. You’ll need to know muzzle velocity and twist rate to cifer out the RPM on a calculator using the formula:

Muzzle FPS * inches in a foot * seconds in a minute / the twist, for example: 3500 * 12*60 / 8 = 315000.

Since the 12 (inches) and 60 (seconds) parts of it never changes and 12 * 60 is constantly forever gonna equals 720 then you can use the constant 720 in place of 12 * 60, for example: 3500 * 720 / 8 = 315000.

So with a muzzle velocity of 3500 fps times the constant of 720 divided by 8, beings the barrel’s twist is 1 in 8, the formula will look and cifers out on your calculator like this: 3500 * 720 / 8 = 315000. If’n all the data entered was for real, any bullet that’s leaving that barrel at that velocity is gonna be spinning at 315,000 RPM.

Thanks Roger :)

Well I got a good deal on some Nosler 70gr Ballistic Tip Varmint bullets today. The local Cabelas store had them on sale. $47.99 per 250ct box. They only had 2 boxes left so I got 500 bullets for $95.98.

Figured it would give me something else to try in the 6XC.

I have a Bartlein 7.7 T that I have firefromed 243 AI's in over 4100 with 55 BT's and not had any issues. Very accurate too

I put some 55 gr Nosler BTS and Sierra 60s through my 1 in 8 twist. 53grains of w760 pushed both bullets to 4100 fps 3 days ago .No problems for either.
I think it is hard to blow up ballistic tips.I can't remember that happening at all to me over the years.

This is my 6mm Remington that I built specifically for prairie dogs. It has an 8 twist Kreiger on it. I have a load of 55's just for close shots because it makes the doggies pop so loud I can hear it over my ear pro. It's pretty awesome.

That being said, I've had some problems with bullet poofs while figuring this all out. Bergers and Vmax's just cannot handle the twist at that velocity and have jacket failures. Nosler Ballistic Tips and Varmageddons are the only ones I've found that will stay together at this velocity. (I've never tried any of the other bullets that have been recommended so far)

As far as velocity, I've pushed them to 4200 but had MAJOR pressure signs, lots of jacket failures, and horrible accuracy from the ones that stayed together anyway. Keeping them at 3950 or below is where the accuracy is (at least in my rifle) and the jackets don't have any problem staying together.

I have zero experience with an XC, but hopefully this will be somewhat helpful anyway.

Thanks ryguy00 :) 6XC is going to be just about the same velocities as the 6MM Remington.

I ordered an additional 500 - 75gr Sierra HP varminter bullets as well. Figure if I have trouble, I'll just slow em down. If they don't shoot good at all, then I can still use them in my 6mm Remington.

Your review of Nosler bullets gives me hope for the 500 - 70gr ballistic tip varmint bullets I have for testing as well.

Ohh Dont worry. You'll never be able to push the 70's and 75's fast enough to have jacket failures. Accuracy nodes is another question. I shoot the 55's and 108's out of my 6rem, nothing in the middle, so i can't even recommend a ballpark accurate velocity for them. Not that your rifle would agree with mine anyway.

In my standard 6BR and 70 grain BK I am shooting 32 gr 8208 (new). Standard primer. It hops and I find it very similar to my 55 grain 22-250, only more hit on bigger groundhogs

Yeah my 75gr in my 6mm Remington at 3475 fps puts on quite the display of carnage with close up ground squirrels. Reminds me of a Gallagher show :)
