Light Weight Carry Rifle Guidance

I was considering building a 6.5 x 47L carry rifle. Does not have to be ultra light but light enough not to wear you out working the Texas Hill Country.

I was thinking of a 22" barrel but not sure of the contour. I wanted to have a barrel that would hold 1/2 moa(3 shot group) at 100 yards. Would be one or two shots at a time out in the field.

Any guidance on stock and ideas for keeping the weight down would be appreciated.

I have just built a 7-08AI hart bbl 24" #3 taper fluted on a 700SA, with Luepold 4.5-14x weight 7.2# in HiTech stock - expect 140 gr at 3000+

going to fire form and crono this weekend subject to weather.

I would 2nd the Hi-Tech Stock. Most are 20 oz & really nice hunting stocks. You will need to bed , finish & install a pad.
Fiberglass with a urethane core.

Spec5Tex,

I just took delivery of my new 6.5x47 hunting rifle in October.

Pierce short action with lengthened port
Broughton #3.1 26" SS 5C
Rifle Basix 2 lbs
Pierce 1-pc 20 MOA alum pic base (originally 2-pc Farrell's but Pierce was lower)
Farrell 30mm alum rings
NF 2.5-10x32 with NP-R2 reticle
McMillan Rem Sporter Edge filled
PTG BDL bottom metal and round bolt knob (originally tact knob but I work the bolt better with round knob)
Rem mag box, follower & spring

All built by Chris Matthews of http://longshotriflesllc.com/

8 lb 10 oz

Guys

Thanks for the guidance. I was leaning towards a #3 taper but was wondering what others were using and the results. I will have to check out the stock.

I have a 6/250 rig with a #5 taper, 26". Too heavy to hump around the hills but a great shooter in a fixed position.

Thanks!

SDH,

Which optics? Can really make the difference. My 8 lb 10 oz would be a lot skinnier if I had a Leupold on it rather than the 19 oz NF 2.5-10.

whatever contour u decide on,flute the barrel. 2.5X8 leopold.2 piece bases, etc. try to keep total weight below 7 lbs. for a carry gun.

A 22" #2 or #3 contour With McMillan edge stock ADL configuration, Remington M700 action Tally LW bases and either 2.5-8 x36 or 6X Leupold will get you real close to 7lbs. which is ideal for a carrying rifle if you ask me.

The difference between a #2 and #3 Lilja 20 caliber barrel is 8 oz, but i feel the #3 balances better

This is about as practical and ideal as it gets in my book

Hi,
I'm going down the same road. Here is what I'm going with...
Trued Rem 700 short action (ADL). Including the bolt sleeving.
22" True Flight #3 four groove, 1 in 8 twist barrel, not fluted.
High Tech stock, eventually, ADL wood stock for starters.
Weaver rail and Warne steel 1"rings. Still tossing up scope choice.

Still leaves scale to reduce weight (stock, rings, choice of scope). Will more than likely suppress it at some stage. Hopefully it will come home around or before the end of July.

Figure I should still have enough velocity, gunsmith recently finished another 6.5x47L with 20" barrel, fitted with an over-barrel can suppressor, that is making 2700fps, and nice little groups. :)

Good luck

S/S 700, 23" fluted #3 Rock, McMillan Classic Edge, Talley mounts, Leupold 3.5-10 CDS,

Chambered in 7-08.

Weighs in at 6lb 12oz.
