Light recoiling 6-800 yard varmint gun

My dad has bad shoulders and after he was bucked off a horse last year, even his 243 AI gives him issues. Any thoughts on a new chambering that can still get a p-dog out to 800 yards? I was thinking a very heavy contour 22-250 in about an 8 twist to shoot the 80 gr Amax. He refuses to use muzzle brakes also. What barrel length would be optimal for best performance?

All ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

If he's not planning on a walking gun build him a heavy 6br and what little recoil there is well be lighten even more. Or you could always try a muzzle break on his 223AI if your not wanting to build a whole new gun.

R. W. Hart of nescopeck Pa makes a muzzle brake that does not harm accurcy and will make the current rifle feel like a22 hornet

can you explain the no likey the muzzle brake ..... holland makes one that goes up and to the side so that your not blowing up a bunch of dust.....i have never had a holland that effected the accuracy of any of my guns......and i can see the bullet hit shooting out at the 500 + range.....the one draw back of muzzle brakes is they are noisier for the shooter, but on the plus side what ever is out in front at a distance has a hard time telling where the shot came from.....yes i have experimented...........................
under stand the effect of shoulder injury getting bucked off horses..... my sons won't let me on the snorty ones any more ...at 67 they think i'm over the hill......
if you can find a ruger mark II V 220 swift and rebarrel to a lilja or Mcgowen 8 twist with a holland muzzle brake and a good recoil pad (limbsaver)s it will be a delight to shoot.
i have intimate knowledge of this info..... ;D

+1 for above, i but try 76 and shoulder and open heart, the Hart works great and on 280ai shoots like a 223

i agree with the 6Br since dad does not like to use muzzlebrakes. you might consider mecury break installed in the butt stock . T.R.

6br is hard to beat.
I have over 2000 rounds out of mine and it still is deadly. I haven't shot it at a target in a couple years so I don't know if the groups are getting bigger but if they are under 400 yards they are in serious trouble. I shoot small ground squirrels that look a lot like a Prairie dogs but about 1/4 the size.

He can shoot very heavy rifles, use muzzle break, or hurt....pick.....

put lead in the stock and forearm.

Regular foam ear plugs with electronic ear muffs work really great with muzzle breaks...

Sounds like your dad is in for some shoulder surgery...good luck!
