light loads to squib loads

During a discussion about recoil with the 45-70 and 45-90 cartridges, the topic of light loads and/or squib loads came up. Not sure about the differences between the two, if indeed there are any, but the discussion seemed to indicate that a light load was a reasonable way to lessen recoil, and accuracy) while a squib load could leave the bullet in the barrel and was dangerous. Any one wish to clarify?
