Light loads for the 300 rum

I'll be loading some light loads for a friends 300 rum here soon, and i thought i'd ask what powders were best to get this done. I'll be loading the old Nosler 165 solid base bt for it, and would like to be around 3000 fps. So.... what say ye? Is there a magic powder out there that works better for this than others?

I have not loaded for the 300 RUM but looking in my Hodgdon manual it looks like IMR 7828 start 84.5 grs gives 2985 fps and max 90 grs gives 3178 fps or IMR4350 start 78 grs gives 2985 fps and max 83 grs gives 3181 fps is in the ball park of what you want.

I see there are a good many that fit the bill, but thought maybe someone had some luck with a particular powder . With the huge case it seems you still have to burn a mountain of powder to end up with 100 fps faster than a '06. The IMR 4350 loads look to use less powder to get there.

If your friend is constantly shooting "light" loads. Do him a favor and talk him into a more economical round......
A 165 grain .308" bullet @ 3000fps is a light load....................for a 300 wsm.
At least in the smaller cartridge you could maintain better load density without redesigning the wheel.

I agree. He'd rather have a '06, but i can't see him spending the money on one. He's 150 lbs soak and wet, and when it comes time to check zero on his rifle for deer season there's a very good chance he will be bloodied up from shooting it. I'm just trying to help him out. He has zero $ invested in the dies and components I've gathered to load for him.

If the guy can't handle the recoil he needs a muzzle brake or trade the gun on something smaller. A 243 will kill any deer guickly and doesn't recoil much. Matt

Well I guess we've come full circle here. RL19 AND RL22 fit the bill pretty well and will work in some of my stuff too. I'm going to try the starting load, and back off some. Would the faster powder of the two be a better choice since I'm reducing?

You need to be careful because reducing in a 300 Ultra can get dangerous. Look up secondary pressure ammo spike. The guy figured out to make this and was experimenting when it blew the end 5 to 6 inches off his barrel while testing this. I read someplace a 300 Ultra is one that can get this easily.

I also note Hodgdon does not list H4895 reduced loads for the Ultra. There are some excellent ones for the WM. I get 1/2" grps using 125gr Nosler BTs.

I don't see the point in the big .30 cal mags like the RUM, 30-378 WBY etc etc shooting light bullets. IMO they are designed for the heaviest of the 0.308" bullets like the 230s and 240s. Have your buddy trade that gun off for an 06, or if his heart is set on a magnum chambering, a .300 WSM.

Maybe you can list in the classifieds as a wts/wtt and get a reasonable solution. As far as the secondary pressure spike you might try filling the rest of the case with cotton or dacron to hold the powder against the primer for more consistant ignition. Hope this helps, Paul

Remington sells reduced load ammo in 300 rum, the heaviest bullet they use is 180g if I remember rite . seams like a good idea , you can run lite loads to shoot small game or heavy loads for big game . I run 200 noslers with rl25 but only use it for big stuff. does Remington have a reloading data site for there bullets, if so they may list the reduced loads.http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/centerfire/power-level/power-level.aspx

No gun shoots good with reduced loads. That is really not what they were made for. Remingtons reduced loads don't reduce a lot of recoil. A 300 Ultra still kicks. The way to reduce recoil is get a smaller gun or brake it. A shooter that is afraid of gun never shoots good. A lot easier to get another gun. Matt
