light load for S & W 41 mag.

In process of obtaining a s&w m58 in 41mag. In addition to the loads in lyman, does any one have a light load with a 215 gr. swc bullet they like. thanks

I use Titegroup and Starline 41 Special brass for all my plinking ammo.

My model 58 has fixed sights so plinking ammo is a no-go for me with that pistol because it does not hit POA/POI.

I shot a 200 gr. Keith bullet and about 16 gr (maybe more) of 2400 in my S&W 41 Mag. This was my load for many years. I loaded some 210 gr, the difference in recoil was significant. The powder amount was very close to the same, but 5% more bullet weight really added to the recoil. The only 44 I've ever shot was a Freedom Arms 44 Cas., too much for me! The 41 Mag using 200 gr. bullets was enjoyable and fun. I tried a Marlin rifle in 41 Mag. but the feeding problems ended my ownership. I wanted to carry it on horse back, when in real bear country (Montana), but it was not dependable. Maybe me, maybe the gun??

My Taurus Raging Bull is a pussycat compared to my .454, .475 Linebaugh, .500 Mags. I've used 21.5 gr. WW296 for 40+ years. Just killed a crop damage doe at 59 yds. with a Speer 200 gr. half jacket HP. 210 gr. cast SWCs shoot great with 20.5 gr. WW296. Look in Hodgens yearly manual for light loads for these bullets. Unique always works well for all my light loads in larger revolvers.

While I no longer have a 41 Magnum, I do shoot 44 Spl, 44 Magnum, 45 Colt, and 454 (smaller stuff too). I have found HS-6 to be perfect for me in lighter loads using heavier for caliber LFN bullets. Maybe a better description would be medium loads at 900 to 1050 fps. I have found it an easy powder to find good loads and when your cases come out of the cylinder relatively clean, accuracy is usually good too.

You can go lower or a little higher, but HS-6 shines in the medium range. No drama such as muzzle pointing towards the shy, or flames threatening to set forest fires. It is the fastest powder I use in the above mentioned calibers and I probably use it the most with AA9 next. H110 is reserved for rock crushing/drama hot loads.

Shot a lot of 220gr NEI SWC’s with 12.0gr old recipe Blue Dot for about 1050fps. Very accurate in 5.5” Redhawk and several other 41’s. My favorite caliber, though no longer shooting much revolver these days.

With a Ruger Blackhawk 6.5” shot many pounds of Bluedot 10- 15 grains with 215 grr cast the harder the better. Still my favorite carry gun and load.

Titegroup is a good powder for lighter loads in larger capacity pistol cases as per their website. I’ve been using it for years in 41,44,45.

Believe that may refer to the newest version of Blue Dot. Older lots-maybe 15yrs ago-performed extremely well, without pressure issues, though 12.0gr was not pushing hard with 220gr hardcast bullets.

Excellent. Around 1.5-2 inches at 25 yards.

Low ES/SD as an added bonus.

I have used 7.2 grains of WW-231 or 15.5 grains of IMR-4227 when loading Kieth style 215 grain LSW's. Both loads run around 960 fps from my handguns. Significantly faster (IMR-4227) from my carbine, approximately 1250 fps.

My IMR-4227 load is significantly lower than any published data I could find but exhibits low SD's and is very accurate from my firearms.

Glad the OP asked this question. When I first got my 657 I started with 22.0 grains of H110 and while under max it got my attention. Very accurate and fast so I haven't changed but always wondered how it would do with a mild load. Just got another jug of Titegroup that I mostly use for the Dillon and 9mm. Looking forward to trying an accurate/mild load for more fun shooting. I really should have explored this a long time ago. Another case of too many irons in the fire.

Thanks for 4227 load. I have sw 57 8 3/8. & Ruger BH 4 5/8. Looking for mild load but well filled case !! R
