Things that roll under an inconvenient location - SOCKETS!

Back in the 1960's, when I used to do a lot of car work, anytime I dropped a socket it would roll right smack under the middle of the car.

In the 1970's, after they added all the antipollution gadgets and lots of other crap (just my opinion), if I dropped a socket it did not even make it to the floor and it was a challenge to find where it was hung up.

Had a set of factory Toyota wrenches that came with my FJ40. Eventually, I ended up missing one and was without for several years. When we finally did a frame off restoration, ... I found it latched to a bolt on the rear frame crossmember.

For anyone who has ever spent 2 minutes to launch a spring that took only (hopefully) 4 hours to find (if at all).

I remember the first time I took apart a 1911 and the safety/slide plunger went into orbit!
My cat saw it and pounced on it and I retrieved it.
That’s another proof that our furry friends are angels.

Years ago I had a Holland and Holland side by side that needed a new main spring. Somehow I managed to launch it into never never land. Had to buy another new spring. Almost exactly a year later year later I walked in to the shop and could feel a rock stuck in the lug of my boot. I bent over to pick the rock out and it the spring!

Not a spring but a 1911 reverse recoil spring plug.

While assembling the gun I launched the plug, heard it hit the ceiling (basement), look for a couple of hours for it without luck - I had a spare.

I found it about 18 months later when I needed my small magnetic level. The plug went behind it and attached itself to the magnet. The level is 1 foot to the left of where I was working.

About five years ago I was removing one of my Kimber 22LR converson units from a 3" CDP .45 frame. It appears I was not paying the usual attention I'm known for, and the front recoil spring plug launched into low earth orbit. Searched for over an hour in the gun room to no avail, ordered and received a new factory replacement.

After five years, that little critter is still in 'never-never to be found land', and is still MIA. When they clean out my gun room when I'm pushin' up daisies, it might be found.

These stories are sure amusing, but dang frustrating when they happen. Old, pissed off guys on hands 'n knees blundering and poking about looking for some tiny little object that might not ever be found.

I had a Daisy CO2 pellet pistol with a horrible trigger pull. Was in Grandads TV room and Took the grip panels off and took out the spent CO2 cartridge. Next I grabbed the spring to unhook it and off it went. Looked for hours. Thing was maybe 1" long. Gave up after looking on and off for a week.

Sometime, months later, heard a noise outside and went over to the window to see what was going on and happened to glance up at a dark spot on Grandmothers lace curtains. That little bugger had launched itself and hooked on a curtain about 7' off the ground and a good 12ft away from where I was working on the BB gun.
