Light Firing Pin Hits

I have a Borden action with a CG trigger. Recently i have been experiencing light hits. Initially, the primers showed a depression but did not ignite. I removed the firing pin and cleaned it.

I continue to get light hits. The only difference is that the depression left is faint

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Borden is a rem 700 knockoff and the bolt comes apart the same way. Proper firing pin protrusion is .055".

Pop the firing pin out and make sure spring looks good.

Check headspace.

Did Jim Borden build rifle/install the problem(CG) trigger group(doubtful)?

Just swapping out the trigger group w/o adjusting for travel/hand off issues is your problem unless as previously mentioned that you've set shoulders back too far in the reloading process.

Mike,

As this issue is recent, I'd suggest looking for some foreign body that is slowing the firing pin fall, some rubbish in the trigger that's restricting its smooth release, issues with correct firing pin protrusion or the possibility that your case prep parameters have changed. I wouldn't expect it to be an issue with the Borden, but is the sear on the firing pin traveling down its way without snagging on the sides or the action screw.

Firing pin assemblies are way to cheap to not buy one to replace it and be done. I had a rifle with a Tubbs speedlock and tryed everything I could think of to alleviate a misfire from time to time. Finally replaced the pin and hadn't had a misfire yet. How many hours and rounds do you want to invest before you buy a replacement???

Call Borden, he will help you figure it out and whatever needs fixing. He stands behind his actions.

Borden will appreciate it if you do the troubleshooting suggested here before calling. You may figure it out before calling. It may not be anything to do with his action. If you're prepared to answer his questions, it will go much faster and he can get back to making quality actions. --Jerry

Since this is a "new thing" with your action let me ask a few questions. 1st. Have you changes primers? 2nd. Do you clean and square the primer pockets?
I had a similar problem with a Gilkes/Ross action. I found if I squared the primer pockets with a tool like the one Sinclair sells and used Wolf primers I was having a lot of failures to fire. Apparently the tool cuts the primer pockets just a little to deep and the Wolf primers are not quite as thick as American primers. Once I stopped using the tool the problem went away. This only occurred when I used Wolf primers, Federal, Winchester and Remington primers fired just fine every time.
