Lg.shank Savage to fit Sm. smank receiver

With a few desirable features found only on Lg. shank Savage barrels is it feasible to make a Sm. shank out of a Lg. shank
or cut off a couple of inch's , re chamber and cut new threads ?

If you are going to buy a large shank barrel, modify it for a small shank action, either by turning threads or cutting down, turning and chambering.....why not just buy a good blank and have it made with out a nut, it can still be switch barrel if done correct.

I see no great advantage in a large shank barrel with extra features, to me it's the bore, chamber and muzzle......which every barrel has.

If the barrel is new I would make a small shank, nutless, if its used and setback, I doubt It will will be a real good shooter.

Works good, I have a couple. 204R and 223 from LRPV. Do not have to turn them very much but the cut goes over 1/3 way down the barrel. Polish with emmery cloth to clean up. These were stainless no flutes.

From time to time 308 30" Savage Bbl's with 5R rifling, I have a shooting buddy that is a retired machinist and is always looking for rainy day projects. However, since my range just banned steel targets this project is dead.

Not difficult to adapt a large shank Savage bbl. to small shank. Simply chase the threads deeper and cut down the major diameter, as both are 20 TPI and turn down the barrel for a short distance behind the nut, tapering it back up to full diameter of the barrel at that point. No need to cut it off or rechamber. There are some barrel options available in the large shank that are not available in small shank factory barrels, and small shank actions are much more available and affordable. Large shank barrels also seem to be better quality, as I've never had one that wasn't at least good enough for varmints (under 1/2 MOA with handloads). With small shank varmint barrels, I have had several, including SS ones that would not meet this criteria. Like others, I have found some good bargains in take-off large shank barrels.

I just had one turned from large to small shank. I was building a rifle for the Queen and had a .223 takeoff from my Savage Target action. It shot very well on the Target Action and Shoots very well on the Mod 12 now.
