I have a old leupold 8.5 x 25 with varmint reticle maybe 30 or more years old not sure are them older scopes better the mechanism & tracking ability just the whole scope in general oh & it’s a VX 3

Glass (coatings) and clicks vs friction adjustments are about the only difference (in broad terms). But if the scope is clear and tracks as it should don't worry about it.

I had a Leupold Vari-X 2 6 power that I bought used in the late 70’s or early 80’s. A couple of years ago some glass came loose. I sent it off to Leupold and they sent me a new one. And twice I sent them old Vari-X III’s for reticle replacements. They did as I asked, and refreshed all the internal parts. Only the reticle change was at my expense.
